{"id":366722,"date":"2025-08-23T07:57:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-23T07:57:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/366722\/"},"modified":"2025-08-23T07:57:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-23T07:57:14","slug":"skyscraper-uni-halls-set-to-go-ahead-after-campaigners-win-row-over-1996-order","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/366722\/","title":{"rendered":"Skyscraper uni halls set to go ahead after campaigners win row over 1996 order"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It will change one end of the city centre<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1_MMU-halls-CGI-all-saints.jpg\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>How the new towers could look when viewed from All Saints Park(Image: Pickard Cartwright for MMU\/Unite Students via planning documents)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Thousands of student bedrooms are set to be built in halls of residence skyscrapers at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The uni\u2019s Cambridge Halls, built around All Saints Park on <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/oxford-road\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Oxford Road<\/a>, will be demolished and replaced by two towers, 30- and 24-storeys tall containing 2,302 student rooms, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/new-build-towers-offering-over-32317648\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">under new plans.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Manchester council is set to give the project, which will add more than 1,500 rooms to the area, planning permission on Thursday (August 28).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">To see planning applications; traffic and road diversions and layout changes; and more, visit the Public Notices Portal <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/publicnoticeportal.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"HERELink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It comes after MMU revised its plans following a row over a <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/1996-order-could-stop-eight-31918523\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">29-year-old legal order<\/a>. Campaigners claimed the original plans would have blocked a key cycling route on Cavendish Street, which broke the order closing the road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Walk Ride Greater Manchester said a \u2018stopping order\u2019, issued in June 1996, gave MMU permission to close a section of Cavendish Street next to All Saints Park to motor vehicles \u2014 but only on the condition it \u2018shall provide a new highway which shall be a footpath\/cycleway along the route\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThe existing space is 12 metres wide at its narrowest \u2013 and 20 metres wide for most of its length. Many public roads are narrower,\u201d the group said in June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cHow can there not be enough room for a simple two-way segregated cycle track? MMU could easily lay out their new buildings and planted areas so that everyone can use the space safely. Instead they\u2019ve made deliberate design decisions to exclude cycling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_FireShot-Capture-036-Planning-Google-Drive-drivegooglecom.png\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The new cycling route for Cavendish Walk(Image: Manchester council)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Active Travel England also had concerns, prompting MMU to confirm \u2018the route would continue to function as pedestrian and cycle route with improvements to the space, including seating and planting\u2019, a council planning report said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Another eye-catching proposal going to Manchester planning committee next week is a bid to run DJ events in a warehouse near Victoria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Applicant Connecting Dots Group has constructed a \u2018dance floor, bar, front of house and a stage\u2019 already, and now want to \u2018regularise\u2019 existing events.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Also recommended for approval, events should take place on Burstock Street, behind the Marble Arch Inn pub on <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/rochdale\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Rochdale<\/a> Road, at weekends until 2am \u2014 but no more than six times per month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Councillors will also consider plans to open two Lidl supermarkets, in Charlestown and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/rusholme\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Rusholme<\/a>, which have been objected to by a number of residents.
