(Image: Rob Browne)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/sport\/rugby\/rugby-news\/jamie-roberts-flies-start-new-32207899\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Jamie Roberts&#8217; first month as a junior doctor<\/a> with the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/cardiff\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Cardiff<\/a> and Vale Foundation Trust has been eventful to say the least.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/sport\/rugby\/rugby-news\/jamie-roberts-big-career-announcement-31657183\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">In an exclusive interview with WalesOnline in May Roberts outlined the intensive training required as he aims to become an orthopedic surgeon.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The former Wales centre always thrived under pressure on the rugby field but it is nothing compared to what he has faced as a junior doctor so far.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Roberts works four days a week as a resident doctor and his first few weeks in the job have been a whirlwind, facing some difficult moments already. But, as he says, it&#8217;s all part and parcel of the role.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;The first couple of weeks have been crazy,&#8221; he told <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sport\/rugbyunion\/article-15025047\/patients-photos-Wales-legend-Jamie-Roberts-NHS-doctor.html\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">MailOnline.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;I\u2019ve been involved in a resuscitation where unfortunately the patient didn\u2019t make it, a collapsed lung and a patient who had a fitting condition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;That\u2019s come quite early.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;But it\u2019s part of the job. I\u2019ve probably used my mind more in the last two weeks than I have in the last two years and that\u2019s given me great pleasure because it\u2019s what I enjoy. I\u2019m stretching myself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;You can never know everything as a doctor. I\u2019ve enjoyed being around younger people. It keeps me young!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Roberts will mix his career as a doctor with his role as an independent non-executive director on the Welsh Rugby Union board, along with various jobs in the media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But even while on duty as a doctor his former rugby career follows him around, with patients asking for selfies a common occurrence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;You can see the joy it brings patients to talk about rugby,&#8221; he told MailOnline. <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/newsletter-preference-centre\/?view=Solus&amp;mailingListId=e90f3817-255f-4349-881b-d9a4515d3f52&amp;utm_source=solusarticle\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Get the latest breaking Welsh rugby news stories sent straight to your inbox with our FREE daily newsletter. Sign up here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;It shows the passion people still have for the game in Wales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;If doing that with me brings joy to them while they\u2019re in hospital, then that\u2019s amazing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;I keep reminding my colleagues I\u2019m just a kid from Cardiff who used to be good at rugby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;That was my past life. In medicine, it comes from doing right by the patient. It\u2019s been in at the deep end,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;But I\u2019ve loved it. I do my first overnight shifts this weekend, so that will be another challenge but one I\u2019m looking forward to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;I\u2019m working as a doctor 80 per cent of my time because I have a young family, but also because I want to stay involved in the game. It\u2019s given me so much.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;I want to give back to it. Part of me would love to coach one day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;I\u2019m involved in the media which I enjoy. The WRU board stuff is great. I\u2019m non-executive which brings pros and cons. I still have a huge passion for Welsh rugby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;We all want it to be successful and for Wales to get back to the top. I played in some bloody good teams and when I look back, the best thing about them was they were full of people ready to speak their mind and enjoy healthy challenge.
