{"id":367607,"date":"2025-08-23T16:05:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-23T16:05:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/367607\/"},"modified":"2025-08-23T16:05:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-23T16:05:14","slug":"common-healthy-drink-is-actually-not-as-good-for-you-as-we-think","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/367607\/","title":{"rendered":"Common &#8216;healthy&#8217; drink is actually not as good for you as we think"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The British Heart Foundation has said that while we may think the drinks are a healthy option due to their ingredients, they actually don&#8217;t have the same benefits as eating entire, unblended  fruits and vegetables<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_Woman-drinking-mug-of-tea-or-coffee.jpg\" alt=\"Woman drinking mug of tea or coffee\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Tea and coffee is actually one of the best drinks you can have, the BHF explains(Image: Getty)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A drink frequently hailed as &#8216;healthy&#8217; isn&#8217;t actually a magic bullet for shedding pounds or improving your diet, health experts have warned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The British Heart Foundation has said while we may think the drinks are a healthy option due to their ingredients, they actually don&#8217;t have the same benefits as eating entire, unblended fruits and vegetables.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">One major reason why smoothies aren&#8217;t as nutritious as we might believe is because when we blend fruit, it releases the natural sugars inside the fruit&#8217;s cell walls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This transforms them into &#8216;free sugars&#8217;, which are identical to sugars added to food and drinks &#8211; and consuming too much of these can lead to weight gain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Nevertheless, homemade versions are likely to have less sugar and more fibre than their shop-bought counterparts, so it is best to make your own if you&#8217;re looking for a healthier choice, reports <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/life-style\/health\/2097657\/healthy-drink-isnt-actually-good-cardiologists-reveal\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">the Express<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">When it comes to making your own version at home, you should consider combining a protein &#8211; such as Greek yoghurt, nut butters, or protein powder &#8211; with fruit, greens, and a liquid base such as milk or water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Jordan Spivak, a dietitian from Sibley Memorial Hospital, told Johns Hopkins that fruit contains carbohydrates, which can impact blood sugar levels.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_Young-girl-drinking-tasty-juice.jpg\" alt=\"Simple changes can make a big difference to your health\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Homemade smoothies are better for your health(Image: SHARED CONTENT UNIT)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Spivak added: &#8220;So it is best to consult with a dietitian on what carbohydrate amounts are best for your personalized nutrition needs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Portion size is crucial, with the recommended serving size being 150ml, but supermarket or cafe\u0301 smoothies often exceed this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The BHF warns: &#8220;It can also be hard to keep an eye on how much you&#8217;re drinking because smoothies and juices are not as filling as unblended fruits because they contain much less fibre.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">To stick to the 150ml limit, consider sharing your smoothie or saving some for later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">While it may seem that blending a variety of fruits and veggies into a smoothie would easily meet your five-a-day target, this isn&#8217;t exactly the case. The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/nhs\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">NHS<\/a> clarifies that a single 150ml glass of smoothie only counts as one portion of fruit and veg, regardless of the number of different types in the drink.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">According to the BHF, the top three beverages are water, followed by hot drinks like tea or coffee &#8211; without sugar &#8211; and then sugar-free colas and squashes.
