{"id":367838,"date":"2025-08-23T18:17:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-23T18:17:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/367838\/"},"modified":"2025-08-23T18:17:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-23T18:17:10","slug":"us-immigration-officials-intend-to-deport-kilmar-abrego-garcia-to-uganda-kilmar-abrego-garcia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/367838\/","title":{"rendered":"US immigration officials intend to deport Kilmar \u00c1brego Garc\u00eda to Uganda | Kilmar \u00c1brego Garc\u00eda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">US immigration officials said they intend to deport Kilmar \u00c1brego Garc\u00eda to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/uganda\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Uganda<\/a>, after he declined an offer to be deported to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/costa-rica\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Costa Rica<\/a> in exchange for remaining in jail and pleading guilty to human smuggling charges, according to a Saturday court filing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Costa Rica offer came late on Thursday, after it was clear that the Salvadorian national would probably be released from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/tennessee\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tennessee<\/a> jail the following day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u00c1brego declined to extend his stay in jail and was released on Friday to await trial in Maryland with his family. Later that day, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) notified his attorneys that he would be deported to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/uganda\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Uganda<\/a> and should report to immigration authorities on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BillMelugin_\/status\/1959012756348445082\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">According to<\/a> official documents posted online, the DHS told \u00c1brego\u2019s attorneys on Friday afternoon that the \u201cDHS may remove your client \u2026 to Uganda no earlier than 72 hours from now (absent weekends)\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Immigration and Customs Enforcement also directed \u00c1brego to report to its Baltimore office on Monday, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BillMelugin_\/status\/1959012756348445082\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">according to<\/a> records posted online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u00c1brego entered the US without permission in about 2011 as a teenager after fleeing gang violence. He was subsequently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/apr\/16\/who-is-kilmar-abrego-garcia\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">afforded<\/a> a federal protection order against deportation to El Salvador.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The 30-year-old was initially deported by federal immigration officials in March. Though the Trump administration admitted that \u00c1brego\u2019s deportation was an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/apr\/01\/ice-error-deported-maryland-man-el-salvador\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cadministrative error\u201d<\/a>, officials have repeatedly accused him of being affiliated with the MS-13 gang, a claim \u00c1brego and his family vehemently deny.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">During his detention at El Salvador\u2019s so-called Terrorism Confinement Center (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/mar\/20\/trump-deportations-venezuela-prison\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cecot<\/a>), \u00c1brego was physically and psychologically tortured, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jul\/02\/kilmar-abrego-garcia-tortured-cecot\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> court documents filed by his lawyers in July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Following \u00c1brego\u2019s wrongful deportation, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/trump-administration\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump administration<\/a> faced widespread pressure to return him to the US, including from a supreme court order that directed federal officials to \u201cfacilitate\u201d his return.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In June, the Trump administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jun\/06\/kilmar-abrego-garcia-charges\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">returned<\/a> \u00c1brego from El Salvador, only to charge him with crimes related to human smuggling, which his lawyers have rejected as \u201cpreposterous\u201d. Those fears were somewhat allayed by a recent ruling in a separate case in Maryland, which requires immigration officials to allow \u00c1brego time to mount a defense.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Separately, in a statement earlier this week, Uganda said that it agreed to a \u201ctemporary agreement\u201d with the US to accept some asylum seekers who are deported from the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Bagiire Vincent Waiswa, permanent secretary of Uganda\u2019s foreign ministry, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/aug\/21\/uganda-reaches-agreement-with-us-to-take-in-some-of-its-failed-asylum-seekers\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>: \u201cThe agreement is in respect of third country nationals who may not be granted asylum in the United States but are reluctant to or may have concerns about returning to their countries of origin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Waiswa added: \u201cThis is a temporary arrangement with conditions including that individuals with criminal records and unaccompanied minors will not be accepted. Uganda also prefers that individuals from African countries shall be the ones transferred to Uganda.
