{"id":368076,"date":"2025-08-23T20:34:39","date_gmt":"2025-08-23T20:34:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/368076\/"},"modified":"2025-08-23T20:34:39","modified_gmt":"2025-08-23T20:34:39","slug":"scotland-38-wales-8-mcghie-hits-a-hat-trick-as-scots-women-open-world-cup-campaign-with-resounding-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/368076\/","title":{"rendered":"Scotland 38 Wales 8: McGhie hits a hat-trick as Scots women open World Cup campaign with resounding win"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul class=\"mol-bullets-with-font\">\n<li class=\"class\"><strong><b>30-point margin of success is a new record for the Scots against their Celtic rivals\u00a0<\/b><\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"class\"><strong><b>Victory was a revenge of sorts for Scotland after losing in World Cup opener three years ago to a last-minute penalty against the same opposition<\/b><\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"class\"><strong><b>Bryan Easson&#8217;s side are now in a strong position to qualify, while Wales must now realistically beat Canada &#8211; ranked No2 in the world &#8211; to do so\u00a0<\/b><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"author-section byline-plain\">By GARY HEATLY <\/p>\n<p class=\"byline-section\"> Published:  15:25 EDT, 23 August 2025   |  Updated:  15:25 EDT, 23 August 2025   <\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Player of the match Francesca McGhie dazzled with a hat-trick of tries as Scotland put in a performance full of pace and power to defeat Wales with a bonus point and get off to a perfect start in their Women\u2019s <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sport\/rugby-world-cup\/index.html\" id=\"mol-eebb6780-8055-11f0-bc0b-0dedaa69929e\" rel=\"noopener\">Rugby World Cup<\/a> campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Most pundits felt this match in Manchester between the sides ranked eighth and ninth in the world was going to be tight all the way, but Scotland had other ideas and were in control for large parts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">This victory at the Salford Community Stadium was the Scots\u2019 first in this competition since 2010 versus Sweden \u2014 and their biggest ever versus Wales \u2014 and it gives them a great chance of a top-two finish in Pool B and a quarter-final spot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Captain Rachel Malcolm said: \u2018On both sides of the ball, this was a great team performance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018There was just a bit of an inevitability about what we were doing. It felt like when they had the ball we were always going to get it back and it felt like when we had the ball we were going to score. We need to think purely about the next game and that is Fiji next Saturday.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">After that Fiji contest Scotland play world No 2 Canada, who defeated Fiji 65-7 yesterday, in Exeter on September 6, but for now they can enjoy this benchmark win.
