New <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biffa.co.uk\/support-resources\/simpler-recycling\/legislation\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Simpler Recycling<\/a> rules under the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/ukpga\/2021\/30\/contents\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Environment Act 2021<\/a> will roll out in 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The changes come as part of a wider ambition by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to reach a goal of recycling <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/circular-economy-measures-drive-forward-ambitious-plans-for-waste#:~:text=News%20story-,Circular%20economy%20measures%20drive%20forward%20ambitious%20plans%20for%20waste,incinerated%20or%20sent%20to%20landfill.\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">65% of municipal waste<\/a> by 2035.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Local authorities across the country are required to implement standardized core recycling collections and weekly food recycling for households by March 31, 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The categories of recycling will be separated into four distinct categories:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Food and garden waste<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Paper and card<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Dry recyclable materials &#8211; plastic, metal, glass<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Non-recyclable waste, known as &#8216;residual waste&#8217;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Households across the country will have to separate paper and card from waste like metal and plastic and dispose of it in a new recycling bin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Cardboard waste, like cereal boxes, for example, cannot be placed in a bin alongside rubbish like wine bottles or milk cartons under the new measures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The new measures will also require councils to introduce weekly food waste collections for most homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">More bins for each household could also be on the agenda, as the overhaul calls for increased separation in the household recycling process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The government hopes that the simplified guidelines will help households to better understand what can and cannot be recycled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The scheme is already in effect for UK businesses with 10 or more employees, while micro-businesses with fewer than 10 employees have until March 31, 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Simpler Recycling initiative will work in parallel with a new <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/defraenvironment.blog.gov.uk\/2025\/01\/31\/introducing-the-deposit-return-scheme-for-drinks-containers\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Deposit Return<\/a> scheme, set to come into force in 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">People will be paid to recycle plastic and metal bottles and cans under a new bottle-return scheme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Members of the public will pay a deposit on drinks bottles, which is then refunded when bottles are turned in for recycling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The scheme has been <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/ireland\/2025\/0201\/1494143-deposit-return-scheme\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">in effect in Ireland<\/a> since February 2024, and has been a success over its first sixteen months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Over 1.6 billion containers were returned by July 2025 and the scheme has helped to significantly reduce the amount of littered containers in public places.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Changes will come into force next yearNew recycling rules are coming into force early next year.(Image: PA) A&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":368134,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3843],"tags":[728,70,16,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-368133","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-environment","8":"tag-environment","9":"tag-science","10":"tag-uk","11":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/115080129920723207","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/368133","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=368133"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/368133\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/368134"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=368133"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=368133"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=368133"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
