The launch will kick off SpaceX&#8217;s 33rd mission for NASA&#8217;s Commercial Resupply Services program, hence the flight&#8217;s name: CRS-33.<\/p>\n<p>Coverage will start roughly 20 minutes before launch. (Image credit: SpaceX)<\/p>\n<p id=\"c141ff57-8fcb-4289-af3d-2c7a3a4cb7f1\">If the launch goes to plan, the CRS-33 Dragon will dock with the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16748-international-space-station.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16748-international-space-station.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Space Station<\/a> (ISS) on Monday (Aug. 25) at the forward port of the Harmony module. Rendezvous coverage will begin on the same feeds starting at 6 a.m. EDT (1000 GMT), with docking scheduled for 7:30 a.m. EDT (1130 GMT).<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"c141ff57-8fcb-4289-af3d-2c7a3a4cb7f1-1\">In the near future, the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18852-spacex-dragon.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18852-spacex-dragon.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dragon<\/a> will also do a &#8220;reboost demonstration&#8221; at the ISS \u2014 meaning that it will fire its thrusters to take the space station higher in its orbit. These reboosts are needed periodically because the ISS flies through a thin skein of air molecules while orbiting <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Earth<\/a> roughly 250 miles (400 kilometers) up. The resulting drag, slight as it is, requires supply ships to boost the station every now and again so that it can keep operating.<\/p>\n<p>These reboosts have historically been done by Russian <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/32645-progress-spacecraft.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/32645-progress-spacecraft.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Progress spacecraft<\/a>. But Russia may <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/russia-stay-international-space-station-partner-2028\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/russia-stay-international-space-station-partner-2028\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">withdraw from the ISS program<\/a> as soon as 2028, so NASA has tasked its U.S. cargo ship suppliers \u2014 SpaceX and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/northrop-grumman-space-systems.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/northrop-grumman-space-systems.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Northrop Grumman<\/a>, which builds the Cygnus vehicle \u2014 to perform reboost demonstrations as supplements. (The ISS is expected to keep operating until late 2030 or early 2031.)<\/p>\n<p id=\"d5a79e7f-2e3e-4996-888f-6ce4e10ca277\">Resupply missions like CRS-33 launch every few months to deliver fresh food, more supplies and equipment, and new science investigations to the astronauts living on board the ISS. And quite a bit is going up on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In addition to food, supplies, and equipment for the crew, Dragon will deliver several experiments, including bone-forming stem cells for studying bone loss prevention and materials to 3D print medical implants that could advance treatments for nerve damage on Earth,&#8221; NASA officials said in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/nasa-sets-coverage-for-spacex-33rd-station-resupply-launch-arrival\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/nasa-sets-coverage-for-spacex-33rd-station-resupply-launch-arrival\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. &#8220;Dragon also will deliver bioprinted liver tissue to study blood vessel development in microgravity and supplies to 3D print metal cubes in space.<\/p>\n<p>The CRS-33 Dragon is expected to remain at the ISS until December.
