{"id":368629,"date":"2025-08-24T01:48:15","date_gmt":"2025-08-24T01:48:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/368629\/"},"modified":"2025-08-24T01:48:15","modified_gmt":"2025-08-24T01:48:15","slug":"im-47-and-work-full-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/368629\/","title":{"rendered":"I&#8217;m 47 and work full time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tA large number of people aged 40 to 75 have no savings, leaving them increasingly vulnerable to poverty in retirement, research shows\t\t\t\t\t                <\/p>\n<p>Sara-Louise Ackrill often thinks about retirement, but, like millions across the UK, she doesn\u2019t see how it will be financially possible.<\/p>\n<p>The 47-year-old, from East London, <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=55199X1622456&amp;isjs=1&amp;jv=15.7.1&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Finews.co.uk%2Fsearch%3Fq%3Drenting%23gsc.tab%3D0%26gsc.q%3Dsavings%26gsc.sort%3D&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Furl%3Fclient%3Dinternal-element-cse%26cx%3D011782314020777428663%3Aycznkklrfq5%26q%3Dhttps%3A%2F%2Finews.co.uk%2Ftopic%2Fsavings%26sa%3DU%26ved%3D2ahUKEwikwLHngJqPAxXTaUEAHfMJNkcQFnoECAcQAQ%26usg%3DAOvVaw1otdg13XmUQxFas7_445B9&amp;xs=1&amp;xtz=-60&amp;xuuid=44756a68a81fe589241841f800d0cc06&amp;xjsf=other_click__auxclick%20%5B2%5D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has no savings<\/a>, no property, no car, and no investments.<\/p>\n<p>She runs a consultancy focused on neurodiversity and became an author earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Each month, she pays herself \u00a34,000 \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=55199X1622456&amp;isjs=1&amp;jv=15.7.1&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Finews.co.uk%2Fsearch%3Fq%3Drenting%23gsc.tab%3D0%26gsc.q%3Drenting%26gsc.page%3D1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Furl%3Fclient%3Dinternal-element-cse%26cx%3D011782314020777428663%3Aycznkklrfq5%26q%3Dhttps%3A%2F%2Finews.co.uk%2Ftopic%2Frenting%26sa%3DU%26ved%3D2ahUKEwiA-rLfgJqPAxVHK_sDHf1SLm4QFnoECAYQAQ%26usg%3DAOvVaw0QicWMXz6yuw1txKcdJa75&amp;xs=1&amp;xtz=-60&amp;xuuid=44756a68a81fe589241841f800d0cc06&amp;xjsf=other_click__auxclick%20%5B2%5D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enough to cover rent and bills<\/a> \u2013 but doesn\u2019t feel able to contribute to a pension.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to The i Paper, she said: \u201cI have autism and ADHD, and I lose a lot of money to the disability tax.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople with long term health conditions can spend hundreds more a month just for being the way they are. For example, a sudden loss of energy when I\u2019m in the city could mean an unbudgeted \u00a360 taxi home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite now earning more than she ever did in her previous roles in hospitality and therapy, <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/savings?srsltid=AfmBOopxSLfFqHRDuwtf-bXZeps87V7GSGnb4GKQZyWrM9imiSN8VAE5&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saving <\/a>still feels out of reach.<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cI often think about retirement but I\u2019m not in a position to do anything about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStarting my business has been amazing but it wasn\u2019t a get rich quick scheme. Being an author doesn\u2019t help much on the financial side of things either.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have always thought I might retire in Asia. I don\u2019t think the UK has much respect for older people, but it would be nice to have the option. I don\u2019t see how I will be able to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Ackrill is not alone. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=55199X1622456&amp;isjs=1&amp;jv=15.7.1&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Finews.co.uk%2Fsearch%3Fq%3Drenting%23gsc.tab%3D0%26gsc.q%3Ddwp%26gsc.sort%3D&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Furl%3Fclient%3Dinternal-element-cse%26cx%3D011782314020777428663%3Aycznkklrfq5%26q%3Dhttps%3A%2F%2Finews.co.uk%2Ftopic%2Fdwp%26sa%3DU%26ved%3D2ahUKEwidr6HxgJqPAxVyU6QEHY7ZLHYQFnoECAMQAQ%26usg%3DAOvVaw2NVjLJj5sEzMwIrct5kgN3&amp;xs=1&amp;xtz=-60&amp;xuuid=44756a68a81fe589241841f800d0cc06&amp;xjsf=other_click__auxclick%20%5B2%5D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)<\/a>, 38 per cent of UK adults aged 40 to 75 have no savings, and a further 20 per cent have less than \u00a315,000.<\/p>\n<p>A quarter of people in this group have <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/inews-lifestyle\/never-retire-45-60-no-pensions-3605130?srsltid=AfmBOoreM_9LV9t38Ldb_FlZXHWbvg8ylSnHpa1bw4ARHkJ5K7eRcBPV&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no private pension<\/a>, with those on lower incomes, renters, and individuals with long-term limiting health conditions the least likely to have one.<\/p>\n<p>She recently consulted a financial adviser, which has offered some optimism.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Ackrill added: \u201cThe financial health meeting I had was really good and we spoke about what I could put aside each month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn reality though, things like unexpected vet bills, birthdays, occasional treats, will eat into the disposable income I do have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018My pension\u2019s worth less than a year\u2019s wage\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Antony Davies, 43, from Wales, shares similar concerns. Despite working in the charity sector for over two decades, he has no <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/inews-lifestyle\/money\/pensions-and-retirement\/pension-saving-didnt-start-35-what-to-do-3074285?srsltid=AfmBOor9O7mb_jXrMIDosTHd8MxShVH0N1kchBwAK9tT46D9orypSvGd&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">substantial pension<\/a> or retirement fund.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cCharity roles are generally low-paid compared to equivalent private-sector positions and rarely include bonuses or significant benefits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRedundancy a few years ago meant a sudden loss of stability, and a lack of local third-sector opportunities pushed me into retail work, which is also low-paid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRising <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/cost-of-living?srsltid=AfmBOoqgzmogmzGgyLLL_yQNfS4_r8a6S7zhx5MhGcoAV8nncISCYdb7&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">living costs<\/a>, periods of ill health, and day-to-day expenses have made saving difficult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do have a small workplace pension that\u2019s currently worth very little, and a modest amount in ISAs meant as an emergency buffer rather than a dedicated retirement fund.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He has only started thinking seriously about retirement in the past couple of years and recognises the benefits of starting earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Davies, who is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), author, historian, and political commentator, said: \u201cIn total, the combined value of my workplace pension isn\u2019t even equivalent to a single year\u2019s wage.
