Fat cat bosses <\/a>at two cash strapped Universities racked up more than \u00a31.4million in expenses and pay in just two years despite financial blackholes and proposed job cuts for staff.<\/p>\n Some \u00a31,421,218 has been shelled out by The University of Edinburgh<\/a> and University of the West of Scotland (UWS) to cover huge pay packets and expenses of the uni bosses globe trotting to exotic locations.<\/p>\n We can reveal Edinburgh University has paid out \u00a3881,789 to its vice chancellor and principal Sir Peter Mathieson <\/a>for pay and expenses.<\/p>\n While UWS\u2019s has paid principal Prof James Miller <\/a>\u00a3539,429 in pay and expenses, including \u00a35970 for a luxury junket to Barbados.<\/p>\n The splurge comes despite Edinburgh University staff facing redundancies as part of plans to save \u00a3140million and job cuts at The University of the West of Scotland which has a \u00a314.4million deficit.<\/p>\n Last night, politicians criticised the eye-watering spending.<\/p>\n Scottish Conservative shadow education secretary Miles Briggs MSP said: \u201cIt\u2019s shocking senior staff at Scottish universities are living it up while a number of institutions face financial black holes.<\/p>\n \u201cStaff across the sector are looking down the barrel of unemployment, while those at the top splash the cash on fancy foreign junkets and luxury accommodation.<\/p>\n \u201cScotland\u2019s universities are at the brink of collapse after years of SNP underfunding. It\u2019s time ministers reined in the waste and delivered the support our institutions desperately need.\u201d<\/p>\n Scottish Labour education spokesperson Pam Duncan-Glancy MSP added: \u201cOur universities are the pride of Scotland and it\u2019s important that every penny is spent wisely.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Scottish Government should be supporting our universities so that they remain enviable institutions for years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n We revealed how University of Edinburgh\u2019s<\/a> Sir Mathieson \u2013 who claims not to know his own \u00a3421,667 salary, which rose from \u00a3417,666 the previous year \u2013 cost the university \u00a342,456 for foreign travel between 2022 and 2024.<\/p>\n Prof Mathieson<\/a> racked up the expenditure on business class flights to South Africa, South Korea, the US and Hong Kong, among others, between March 2022 and May last year.<\/p>\n Our investigation uncovered \u00a33059 spent on accommodation and \u00a31336 on transport in Milan, London, Texas, Brussels, Warsaw and Hong Kong from September 2023 to last July.<\/p>\n In 2018, Prof Mathieson<\/a> was also given a \u00a326,000 relocation budget to move from Hong Kong University where he was vice-chancellor.<\/p>\n We told how Prof Mathieson, who owns a luxury apartment in Wimbledon, lives rent-free in a \u00a31.7million Regent Terrace grace and favour townhouse in Edinburgh.<\/p>\n Prof Miller<\/a>, who joined the uni in November 2022, received a proportion of his salary and emoluments equating to that year \u00a3214,000.<\/p>\n We previously told how UWS\u2019s Prof Miller, 61, who earns \u00a3288,000 a year, including pension contributions, claimed \u00a337,429 in expenses over the term.<\/p>\n An Edinburgh University spokes-woman said: \u201cThe salary of the Principal…is determined by a Remuneration Committee. The property provided as part of the role was donated to the University in 2015 and it is maintained accordingly.<\/p>\n \u201cEvery international visit and associated expense is tied to strategic projects and partnerships, many of which are the result of years of work by our academic and professional staff.\u201d<\/p>\n A UWS spokesman said: \u201cPrincipals at universities in Scotland are not responsible for sett-ing salaries, that is decided by remuneration committees.
