Often, when an exercise comes up repeatedly and is recommended by multiple experts, I\u2019ll end up trying it for myself.<\/p>\n<p>This is exactly what happened when three trainers mentioned the figure-four stretch to me in the space of a week: I had to see what all the fuss was about.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"a673ff8e-7e2c-48a2-9998-2baae82f6a42-2\">I don\u2019t strength train consistently due to an energy-limiting illness, and when I do, I tend to experience lingering muscle soreness for up to a week afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>I try to counteract this with a good five minutes of stretching after a weightlifting session, but most of my favorite stretches (like half-pigeon, lateral lunge and forward fold) target the hips, calves and hamstrings, but don\u2019t fully stretch the area I focus on most: my butt.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, the figure-four is a glute-stretching masterclass, and I was amazed at how much of a difference it made to my post-workout recovery. You can do it seated, but I chose to do a lying version of the stretch.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-how-to-do-the-stretch\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>How to do the stretch<\/p>\n<p id=\"0c5a9728-d782-4c2f-900f-6af38744a944\">Time: 30secs to one minute each side<\/p>\n<ul id=\"acbaeca9-9ad7-48fd-8816-5ff24253f1d9\">\n<li>Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.<\/li>\n<li>Cross your right ankle over your left leg, just above the knee, flexing your right foot.<\/li>\n<li>Slowly bring your left knee toward your chest, lifting the left foot off the floor and clasping your hands around the back of your left thigh.<\/li>\n<li>Pull your left knee toward your chest, pausing when you feel a stretch in your right glute and hip.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a id=\"elk-what-i-found\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>What I found<\/p>\n<p id=\"50a474e6-4789-4860-bfc4-aed3cee4117b\">I did the stretch after a lower-body workout, and the two mornings following my exercise session. Here&#8217;s what I found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Start your week with achievable workout ideas, health tips and wellbeing advice in your inbox.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-i-could-easily-deepen-the-stretch\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>I could easily deepen the stretch<\/p>\n<p id=\"afcf1545-7583-491b-97a5-89cc3d84930a\">By pressing down on the knee of the targeted side, I felt even more of a release in my glutes.<\/p>\n<p>I tend to move progressively deeper into stretches after about 30 seconds, so this was a helpful way for me to up the intensity and make it even more satisfying.<\/p>\n<p>I did this very gently, to avoid over-stretching, feeling a deep release in my pelvis and glute muscles.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-it-s-really-effective-for-the-glutes\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>It\u2019s really effective for the glutes<\/p>\n<p id=\"9244a341-c01e-427c-80e1-ee513ebd5ac0\">I do a lot of hip stretches, as this is a problem area for me, and most of these stretches also target muscles around the pelvis.<\/p>\n<p>However, the figure four stretch targets the glutes directly, which\u2014after a squatting session\u2014is where I need a little extra attention.<\/p>\n<p>I usually struggle with stairs and hills for four to five days after a glute workout, but this time I was back to normal and ready to train again after two days.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-it-eases-early-morning-stiffness\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>It eases early morning stiffness<\/p>\n<p id=\"6e95cc70-b02a-45e9-93f0-8e921bfec8dd\">I tend to wake up with stiff muscles, and this is exacerbated when I do strength training.<\/p>\n<p>But practicing the figure four stretch first thing helped with this habitual stiffness, which meant that I could start my morning with a little more ease and get down the stairs to breakfast without hobbling.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"I interview trainers regularly as part of my job.
