Lagoa Azul\u00a0drops into a more manageable spot and rates as the one to beat<\/strong> <\/strong>\/ JUAN I. BOZZELLO<\/p>\n

The sprinters will take center stage Sunday at\u00a0Hip\u00f3dromo Argentino de Palermo<\/strong>, where the\u00a0Cl\u00e1sico M\u00e9xico (G3, 1000m, dirt)<\/strong>\u00a0headlines the card with a competitive field of fillies and mares set to clash.<\/p>\n

Among them,\u00a0Lagoa Azul (Lenovo)<\/strong>\u00a0looks well placed to get back on the winning track, cutting back in class after holding her own in top company. A winner of the General Alvear (L), General Arenales (G3), and Handicap Spiny in succession earlier this year, she then finished runner-up to\u00a0El Mejor Recuerdo (Il Campione)<\/strong>\u00a0in the G1 Gran Premio Ciudad de Buenos Aires before running a respectable fifth behind\u00a0Le Cornette (Emmanuel)<\/strong>\u00a0in the G1 Estrellas Sprint.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Stud Don Roque<\/strong>\u00a0runner boasts a strong r\u00e9sum\u00e9, but her task won\u2019t be straightforward. Chief among her rivals is the 3-year-old\u00a0Sarzana Pass (Distinctiv Passion)<\/strong>, who takes on older mares for the first time while getting a valuable six-pound weight break under the race\u2019s weight-for-age conditions. The\u00a0Haras El Alfalfar<\/strong>\u00a0homebred has been a model of consistency, with victories in the G3 Carlos Casares, Cl\u00e1sico Carlos Pezoa, and Especial Gay Hermit. Most recently, she ran a game third behind\u00a0Campo Verde (Strategos)<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Lindo Tono Pass (Distinctiv Passion)<\/strong>\u00a0in the G3 Estrellas Junior Sprint and appears poised for another strong performance.<\/p>\n

Candy and Giant (Giant\u2019s Pleasure)<\/strong>\u00a0tries the straight course again, though her best efforts have generally come around a bend. Still, she has shown she can fire in this setup as well.<\/p>\n

Aubrie (Angiolo)<\/strong>, winner of the G3 General Francisco B. Bosch earlier this year, will look to rebound off a disappointing run in the Ciudad de Buenos Aires. She returns after nearly four months on the sidelines.<\/p>\n
