We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 huxBsk\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p>Millions of benefit recipients and pensioners are set to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/dwp-benefits-pension-payment-september-cost-of-living-b2809661.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">receive their usual payments<\/a> early this week as the August bank holiday changes the policy for the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).<\/p>\n<p>The summer bank holiday on Monday 25 August means most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/dwp-compensation-benefits-universal-credit-esa-sdp-b2792732.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">benefit and state pension payments<\/a> due that day will instead be sent on the previous working day, which is Friday 22 August.<\/p>\n<p>This will apply to all major benefits, including universal credit, child benefit,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/pip-claimants-labour-eligibility-assessment-b2778455.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Personal Independence Payments (PIP)<\/a>, carer\u2019s allowance and more. <\/p>\n<p>This means anyone expecting one of these to be paid will receive their funds several days earlier than usual. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/dwp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DWP<\/a> says it has adopted the policy to ensure that recipients\u2019 payments are not affected by banks and government offices closing for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/bank-holiday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bank holiday<\/a> weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Around 24 million people in the country are now in receipt of some combination of DWP-administered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/benefits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">benefits<\/a>, with most impacted by the change.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1755866721_883_98dd2309c67bac56ca8373f0d06d9caeY29udGVudHNlYXJjaGFwaSwxNzUxMzY4MzAy-2.80132787.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Millions of benefit recipients and pensioners are set to receive their usual payments early this week\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE\"\/>Millions of benefit recipients and pensioners are set to receive their usual payments early this week (PA Wire)<\/p>\n<p>Minister for social security and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/disability\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disability<\/a> Sir Stephen Timms said: \u201cWe know how much families rely on these payments, and by bringing them forward ahead of the bank holiday we\u2019re ensuring no one has to worry about whether their support will be there when they need it most.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is especially important ahead of the new school year \u2013 no family should have to choose between buying school supplies and putting food on the table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All working-age benefits, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/universal-credit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">universal credit<\/a>, PIP, and carer\u2019s allowance, were increased by 1.7 per cent in April. The state pension also rose by 4.1 per cent \u2013 an increase of \u00a3472 a year \u2013 in line with the triple lock, matching 2024 wage growth.<\/p>\n<p>Following the passage of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/labour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Labour<\/a>\u2019s controversial welfare bill, all universal credit claimants are due an above-inflation increase to their income next year with an initial rise of at least 2.3 per cent, continuing yearly until 2029.<\/p>\n<p>However, the monthly payment rate for the health-related element of universal credit for new claimants will also be cut from \u00a3105 to \u00a350 and frozen until 2029.
