Carnival is traditionally families and children&#8217;s day<\/p>\n<p>Carefully painted faces and glitter could be seen across the parade<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The annual Notting Hill Carnival has begun with the streets of west London filled with colour and sound.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Musicians and dancers in bright costumes took to the streets for the children&#8217;s parade, as the largest street party in Europe got under way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The day began with an explosion of colour as revellers met for J&#8217;ouvert at 06:00 BST ahead of the children&#8217;s parade, with the streets awash with bright paint and powder. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">J&#8217;ouvert, which means &#8220;daybreak&#8221; or &#8220;opening of the day&#8221; in French Creole, marks the start of the Carnival celebrations across the Bank Holiday weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">More than a million people are Hill on Sunday<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Among those enjoying the festivities was EastEnders star Rudolph Walker who told BBC London it was &#8220;great to see the youngsters enjoying themselves &#8211; they are all fantastic&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Walker, who plays Patrick Trueman in the BBC soap, said coming to Carnival made him want to live for each future event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;I come every year, it&#8217;s my tradition, I grew up in Trinidad with carnival and I know what it does for my soul, my body, my peace of mind,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;The most important thing is to see people together, young and old, having fun.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" costumes, dancing and music<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Following the parade, Sunday&#8217;s festivities continued with sound systems and live stages of music. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Carnival organisers say the event&#8217;s sound system tradition is rooted in Jamaican culture and Reggae music.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Genres including rare groove, house and samba are expected to be played out across the day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Live stages will be held in Emslie Horniman&#8217;s Pleasance Park and Powis Square from noon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The event continues on Monday with the adults parade, more live stages and sound systems.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" hxuGS\">On both days, there will be a 72-second silence at 15:00 to remember the 72 lives lost in the Grenfell Tower fire, as well as those who have died at Carnival in recent years and <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-66498551\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"noopener\">Kelso Cochrane<\/a> whose murder in 1959 became one of the catalysts for the
