{"id":370120,"date":"2025-08-24T16:15:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-24T16:15:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/370120\/"},"modified":"2025-08-24T16:15:12","modified_gmt":"2025-08-24T16:15:12","slug":"migrant-protests-live-asylum-hotel-chaos-as-police-brace-for-fresh-demonstrations-uk-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/370120\/","title":{"rendered":"Migrant protests LIVE: Asylum hotel chaos as police brace for fresh demonstrations | UK | News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Official figures released earlier this month showed a total of 111,084 people applied for asylum in the UK in the year to June 2025, the highest number for any 12-month period since current records began in 2001.<\/p>\n<p>The record level of applications comes as the backlog of people waiting for an initial decision on their claims dropped to 90,812 at the end of June.<\/p>\n<p>There were 32,059 asylum seekers in UK hotels by the end of the same month.<\/p>\n<p>Labour has promised to end the use of the sites by 2029.<\/p>\n<p>Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said &#8220;completely unacceptable&#8221; delays in the appeals process left failed asylum seekers in the system for years.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed new system would see independent adjudicators, rather than judges, deal with appeals over asylum decisions.<\/p>\n<p>There are about 51,000 asylum appeals waiting to be heard, taking on average more than a year to reach a decision.<\/p>\n<p>As measures have been put in place to speed up initial decisions, court delays over appeals are now thought to be the biggest cause of pressure in the asylum accommodation system.<\/p>\n<p>The Home Secretary said the overhaul would result in a system which is &#8220;swift, fair and independent, with high standards in place&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>She said: &#8220;We inherited an asylum system in complete chaos with a soaring backlog of asylum cases and a broken appeals system with thousands of people in the system for years on end.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That is why we are taking practical steps to fix the foundations and restore control and order to the system.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are determined to substantially reduce the number of people in the asylum system as part of our plan to end asylum hotels.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Already since the election we have reduced the backlog of people waiting for initial decisions by 24% and increased failed asylum returns by 30%.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But we cannot carry on with these completely unacceptable delays in appeals as a result of the system we have inherited which mean that failed asylum seekers stay in the system for years on end at huge cost to the taxpayer.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Official figures released earlier this month showed a total of 111,084 people applied for asylum in the UK&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":370121,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7820],"tags":[855,748,393,4884,73949,257,5804,109055,101829,129552,2579,16,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-370120","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-birmingham","8":"tag-birmingham","9":"tag-britain","10":"tag-england","11":"tag-great-britain","12":"tag-immigration-news","13":"tag-london","14":"tag-migrant-crisis","15":"tag-migrant-hotel-protests","16":"tag-migrant-hotels","17":"tag-migrants-news","18":"tag-protests","19":"tag-uk","20":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/115084638552349938","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/370120","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=370120"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/370120\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/370121"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=370120"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=370120"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=370120"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
