Indian envoy Vinay Mohan Kwatra discussed \u201cfair, balanced and mutually beneficial trade ties\u201d with U.S. lawmakers amid ongoing tariff tensions between New Delhi and Washington<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Indian Ambassador has met four U.S. lawmakers in the last 24 hours and 23 since August 9, as revealed by his social media posts.<\/p>\n

Mr. Kwatra met Congressman Representative Joe Courtney, Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Seapower and Projection Forces, on Saturday and thanked him for supporting the bilateral partnership between the two countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cHighlighted our perspectives on trade and economic cooperation, including the need for fair, balanced and mutually beneficial trade ties,\u201d Mr. Kwatra said on his social media post.<\/p>\n

He also had a \u201cproductive discussion\u201d with Congressman Gabe Amo, Vice Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Democrats. He appreciated Mr. Amo\u2019s support for the bilateral ties and \u201cshared perspectives on the importance of fair, balanced and mutually beneficial trade engagements,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

He also had a similar conversation with Congressman Jared Moskowitz, Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Intelligence (HFAC).<\/p>\n

In his conversation with Congressman Ben Cline, the Indian envoy highlighted his country\u2019s growing hydrocarbon purchases from the U.S.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe discussed the importance of fair, balanced and mutually beneficial trade ties,\u201d Mr. Kwatra added.<\/p>\n

Mr. Kwatra also highlighted \u201cIndia\u2019s growing hydrocarbon purchases from the U.S. as an important component of our energy security.\u201d The series of meetings comes amid strain in India-U.S. relations after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed tariffs totalling 50% on India. This includes 25% for New Delhi\u2019s purchases of Russian oil that will come into effect from August 27.<\/p>\n

Defending its purchase of Russian crude oil, India has been maintaining that its energy procurement is driven by national interest and market dynamics.<\/p>\n

India turned to purchasing Russian oil sold at a discount after Western countries imposed sanctions on Moscow and shunned its supplies over its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. <\/p>\n
