Russia\u2019s Foreign Minister said on Sunday there were no plans for a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky<\/a> and Russian President Vladimir Putin, dealing a setback to President Donald Trump\u2019s peace efforts. <\/p>\n

\u201cPutin is ready to meet with Zelensky when the agenda is ready for a summit, and this agenda is not ready at all,\u201d Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with NBC News\u2019 Meet the Press.<\/p>\n

A meeting between Zelensky and Putin had been a key aim of Trump\u2019s following his talks with Putin in Anchorage, Alaska<\/a>, aimed at negotiating an end to the war in Ukraine.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump said following the meeting that the U.S. had \u201cbegun arrangements\u201d for a face-to-face meeting between the leaders of the warring nations. \u201cAfter that meeting takes place, we will have a Trilat, which would be the two Presidents, plus myself. Again, this was a very good, early step for a War that has been going on for almost four years,\u201d he posted on Truth Social.<\/p>\n

Lavrov\u2019s comments suggest President Trump may have miscalculated the momentum of peace talks overall between the two nations. Lavrov said that Russia desires peace, despite Russia launching some of its most aggressive strikes against Ukraine in weeks on Thursday.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cWe want peace in Ukraine. President Trump wants peace in Ukraine,\u201d Lavrov said. \u201cThe reaction to the Anchorage meeting, the gathering in Washington of these European representatives<\/a> and what they were doing after Washington, indicates that they don’t want peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump and Putin failed to reach a peace deal<\/a> in the war during their meeting, although he claims that it is \u201cextremely productive.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump had originally set an August 8 deadline <\/a>for Putin to end the war in Ukraine or face heavy sanctions, but he has since shifted this deadline. On Friday, Trump said he would give Russia \u201ca couple of weeks\u201d before imposing consequences.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019ll know in two weeks what I\u2019m going to do,\u201d Trump told reporters.<\/p>\n

On Monday, Trump met with Zelensky and European leaders,<\/a> promising Ukraine that he would join Europe in providing security guarantees to Kyiv. In recent weeks, Trump has seemingly prioritized an approach to peace more aligned with Putin\u2014 namely, pursuing a full peace deal<\/a> between the two nations, rather than the ceasefire that Ukraine has called for.<\/p>\n

Lavrov’s interview aired on Sunday, Ukraine\u2019s Independence Day.
