A man has been arrested in connection with a security alert in north Belfast which has now ended.<\/p>\n

Controlled explosions were carried out by police over the course of its three-day duration.<\/p>\n

Around 100 residents were evacuated from their homes during the public safety operation which began shortly after 11.30am on Friday following the discovery of a suspicious device on Victoria Parade in the New Lodge. <\/p>\n

In the early hours of Saturday morning, police said: \u201cIn relation to the ongoing incident in the New Lodge area of Belfast, residents should be aware there will be some controlled explosions taking place now for approximately one hour.\u201d<\/p>\n

One man, in his 30s, has since been taken into custody on suspicion of a number of offences.<\/p>\n

Chief Inspector Pete Cunningham said: \u201cPolice attended an address in the Victoria Parade area shortly after 11.30am on Friday 22nd August and discovered a suspicious device at a property.<\/p>\n

\u201cOfficers attended the scene and quickly moved to put a safety operation in place. Roads were closed and a number of nearby houses were evacuated while the operation was ongoing but they have since been able to return and roads have re-opened.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmmunition Technical Officers attended and conducted examinations and controlled explosions on multiple objects located throughout the property. The items, which included suspected explosive devices and firearms, have been removed from the property and will be sent for further forensic examination.”<\/p>\n

Chief Inspector Cunningham added: \u201cThis was an extremely distressing experience for residents, who had to deal with the huge disruption to their community alongside the discomfort and inconvenience of being put out of their homes. I would like to thank everyone affected for their patience while we worked to make the area safe.<\/p>\n
