{"id":371120,"date":"2025-08-25T01:27:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T01:27:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/371120\/"},"modified":"2025-08-25T01:27:12","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T01:27:12","slug":"ukraine-hungary-spat-highlights-tensions-over-pipeline-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/371120\/","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine, Hungary spat highlights tensions over pipeline attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kyiv and Budapest exchanged sharp rhetoric after tensions escalated following a Ukrainian strike on Russian oil infrastructure, which disrupted flows through a critical pipeline supplying Hungary.<\/p>\n<p>During a press conference on Aug. 24, President <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/tag\/volodymyr-zelensky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Volodymyr Zelensky<\/a> suggested that the future of the Druzhba oil pipeline\u2014which delivers Russian oil to Hungary and Slovakia\u2014may hinge on Hungary&#8217;s position regarding Ukraine&#8217;s accession to the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have always supported friendship between <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/trump-very-angry-about-ukrainian-drone-strikes-on-russian-oil-pipeline\/#:~:text=United%20States-,Ukraine,-Russia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukraine<\/a> and Hungary,&#8221; Zelensky <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pravda.com.ua\/news\/2025\/08\/24\/7527625\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. &#8220;The existence of &#8216;Druzhba&#8217; depends on the position of Hungary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Zelensky&#8217;s remarks drew a sharp response from Hungary&#8217;s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, who accused Zelensky of threatening <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/tag\/hungary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hungary<\/a> and its sovereignty. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We urge Volodymyr Zelensky to stop threatening Hungary and to stop risking our energy security,&#8221; Szijjarto said in a statement on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/1561468331901728\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In turn, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha responded to Szijjarto&#8217;s comments, urging Hungary to reduce its dependence on Russian energy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You don\u2019t need to tell the Ukrainian President what to do or say, and when. He is the President of Ukraine, not Hungary,&#8221; Sybiha wrote on <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/andrii_sybiha\/status\/1959676672573419701\">X<\/a>. &#8220;Hungary&#8217;s energy security is in your own hands,&#8221; he added. &#8220;Diversify and become independent from Russia, like the rest of Europe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The diplomatic tensions came days after Ukrainian drone strikes targeted the Nikolskoye pumping station in Russia&#8217;s Tambov Oblast on Aug. 18. The attack temporarily disrupted operations on the <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/druzhba-pipeline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Druzhba<\/a> pipeline, halting crude oil deliveries to Hungary and Slovakia.<\/p>\n<p>The Druzhba pipeline, one of the world&#8217;s largest, carries <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/hungary-condemns-ukrainian-strike-on-druzhba-pipeline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russian oil<\/a> directly to Hungary and Slovakia\u2014the only EU countries still buying Russian crude through the system.
