{"id":371124,"date":"2025-08-25T01:29:17","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T01:29:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/371124\/"},"modified":"2025-08-25T01:29:17","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T01:29:17","slug":"australian-academics-concerned-about-local-research-amid-us-funding-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/371124\/","title":{"rendered":"Australian academics concerned about local research amid US funding cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Cuts to science agencies in the United States are causing &#8220;turmoil&#8221; in regional research projects run by universities across Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Under US President Donald Trump, the US-based National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) had its budget slashed and thousands of jobs cut.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The NOAA collects real-time data from satellites, airplanes, weather balloons, radar and maritime buoys, which is used by forecasters to help project seasonal conditions ahead of time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The impact of the cuts to NOAA is being felt far beyond the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Australia&#8217;s Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) often relies on US data for its ACCESS model, which produces daily weather forecasts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Andrew Watkins is a research associate at Melbourne&#8217;s Monash University and the former head of long-range forecasts at the Bureau of Meteorology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said the cuts would reduce access to crucial datasets, vital for Australia&#8217;s ability to monitor and predict natural disasters, making regional communities more vulnerable to weather events.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;We know in the meteorological community that early warnings save lives, so the ability to put out early warnings of dangerous weather and climate events will be reduced if we don&#8217;t have as much data,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  Dr Watkins said.Aid cuts to hit Pacific\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Academics at Australian universities say the cuts and deregulation of science will have a ripple effect for regional research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Regina Souter heads the International Water Centre at Queensland&#8217;s Griffith University.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman crouched over a scientific instrument while three other people survey\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/f8b4b79663f05bb40d9847b36d0fa2ee\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Regina Souter says her work developing clean water and sanitation in the Pacific has been paused due to USAID cuts. (Supplied: Regina Souter)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Her work also relies on satellite data provided by NOAA to guide efforts to develop clean water and sanitation projects in the Pacific Islands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Souter said her funding was impacted after deep cuts to USAID took place, jeopardising their work.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;The Pacific Island countries are facing increasing challenges around water security as a consequences of climate change,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We are working on research projects with UN [United Nations] agencies and those specific projects were funded by USAID.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;So [because] one of the projects that was funded by USAID was put on hold, that means our ability &#8230; to identify effective development next steps is being hampered.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The UNICEF project had to find funding from other sources and as a result has been severely scaled back.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Culture of fear&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Some Australian academics fear funding could be cut if their research field becomes a target of the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">University of the Sunshine Coast (USQ&#8217;s) associate professor Gail Crimmins said it could discourage researchers from collaborating with the US.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;That edict [in the US] to report colleagues that are engaging in activities around equity, diversity, inclusion does create a culture of fear and suspicion and surveillance that we probably haven&#8217;t seen since the likes of the McCarthy era,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  she said.<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A middle aged lady with blonde curly hair in a short sleeved orange  top \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2cf2b8e27ff40827a9ae35a8e1fc235e\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Gail Crimmins says cuts and changes to US research policy have repercussions for academics across the globe.\u00a0 (Supplied: Gail Cummins)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The McCarthy era was a period in 1950s America characterised by its intolerance of left-leaning ideas amid the spectre of the Cold War and communism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Crimmins said it was tricky finding people who were happy to come on record and say, &#8220;In Australia, my research has been impacted&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Because by doing so we are exposing our colleagues to potential further surveillance and potentially harmful impacts on their academic careers,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Looking elsewhere<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Academics say researchers need to look beyond the United States for funding and scientific data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A regional Queensland climate and marine scientist said working with large datasets you needed to be able to have almost unrestricted and uninterrupted access.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A person wearing blue gloves injects something on a microscope \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/acbbce09ad846b50f15dc693cd827054\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Academics say the cuts and deregulation of science in the US will have a ripple effect on Australian research. (Reuters: Amir Cohen)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He asked the ABC to remain anonymous because he feared retaliation from the US administration toward both himself, and colleagues here and overseas.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;One hour I could get the data [from the NOAA] and the next hour it was down, and I couldn&#8217;t get hold of it,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If we don&#8217;t have access to the data from the earth system models, we can&#8217;t make those projections, we can&#8217;t assess those opportunities and risks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Associate professor Naomi Barnes from the Queensland University of Technology said the concerns about scientific research in the United States led her team to consider working with European partners instead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Part of our grant was an international collaboration grant funded by the Australian government,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We were going to go to the US and talk through this [our project] with colleagues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Two out of three of us have agreed that we need to probably look elsewhere, other than the US.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Barnes said fortunately she could still fulfil the objective by going to Europe.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;In my field people are going to be more likely just not to work with the US for the foreseeable future,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  she said.Federal support needed\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In reaction to the uncertainty enveloping joint US-Australian projects, there were calls for the federal government to step in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">QUT&#8217;s Dr Barnes said federal support would help researchers and experts continue their work without the US.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-08\/australian-weather-forecast-under-threat-from-us-cuts\/105611736\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australian weather forecast under threat<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">US President Donald Trump&#8217;s proposed cuts to US weather and climate services will cause the loss of critical data Australia relies on for its weather and climate modelling.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;We have to come up with a way to not have to be reliant on the US because our national priorities no longer align with theirs,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">USC&#8217;s Dr Crimmins said the government must &#8220;protect the dignity of that research&#8221; at risk from US cuts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a statement, the Australian Department of Education said it was already investing significantly in research, and monitoring changes to joint projects with the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Across the Australian government, total investment in research and development is projected to reach about $15.14 billion in the 2025-26 financial year,&#8221; the statement said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;The Department of Education is working with Australia&#8217;s higher education sector to understand the impacts of potential US research funding cuts.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Australia&#8217;s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said in a statement it was committed to supporting aid work in the Pacific.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Recognising the impact of global aid cuts, we have re-prioritised our development assistance to dedicate 75 cents of every Australian development dollar to support the Indo-Pacific next year,&#8221;
