{"id":372191,"date":"2025-08-25T11:29:17","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T11:29:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/372191\/"},"modified":"2025-08-25T11:29:17","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T11:29:17","slug":"crypto-markets-stumble-as-dormant-whale-dumps-2-7bn-in-bitcoin-dl-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/372191\/","title":{"rendered":"Crypto markets stumble as dormant whale dumps $2.7bn in Bitcoin \u2013 DL News"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul class=\"list-outside pl-8\">\n<li>A dormant whale liquidated 24,000 Bitcoin and rotated into Ethereum.<\/li>\n<li>Traders are also reassessing Fed cut chances after digesting Powell&#8217;s speech.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">Crypto markets flipped bearish late Sunday night after a typically sleepy weekend gave way to a bruising sell-off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">The slump coincided with news that a long-dormant Bitcoin whale, once tied to a massive 2019 withdrawal from the HTX exchange, had offloaded a hoard of 24,000 Bitcoin, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blockchain.com\/explorer\/addresses\/btc\/19D5J8c59P2bAkWKvxSYw8scD3KUNWoZ1C\" rel=\" nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">onchain data<\/a> first uncovered by <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SaniExp\/status\/1959717227302941109\/photo\/1\" rel=\" nofollow\">Timechain Index founder Sani<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">The entity, which hadn\u2019t moved coins in five years, sold roughly $2.7 billion worth of Bitcoin over recent days. <\/p>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">They then began <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mlmabc\/status\/1959711909931827276\" rel=\" nofollow\">buying up tons of Ether<\/a>, amassing more than 400,000, which they used to open leveraged long positions and stake with.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"tklwj1xamr8udyde\"\/>Ethereum touched $5,000 for the first time but got immediately rejected. Source: CoinGecko<\/p>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">But the whale wasn\u2019t the only source of pressure. <\/p>\n<p>Dovish Powell<\/p>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">Last week\u2019s dove-tinged Jackson Hole speech from Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell initially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dlnews.com\/articles\/markets\/xrp-ethereum-soar-powell-hints-at-change-in-bank-policy\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lit a fire under crypto<\/a>, sending Ether up nearly 10% and XRP up more than 5% within hours. <\/p>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">By the weekend, however, traders were second-guessing whether a September rate cut is truly locked in. <\/p>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">\u201cThe speech contained just enough dovish hints to trigger a knee-jerk rally,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prestolabs.io\/research\/daily-market-brief-250825\" rel=\" nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a> Presto Research\u2019s Peter Chung and Rick Maeda. \u201cA closer look reveals it remained non-committal on an immediate cut.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmegroup.com\/markets\/interest-rates\/cme-fedwatch-tool.html\" rel=\" nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CME FedWatch tool<\/a> still pegs the odds near 87%. Punters on the crypto betting market Polymarket are pricing in about an <a href=\"https:\/\/polymarket.com\/dashboards\/fed-rates\" rel=\" nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">81% chance of cuts<\/a>, up from 57% before Powell\u2019s speech. <\/p>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">By Monday morning, the total crypto market cap had shed more than $80 billion to fall back below the $4 trillion mark, and over $715 million in leveraged positions had been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coinglass.com\/LiquidationData\" rel=\" nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">liquidated<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Crypto market movers<\/b><\/p>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li>Bitcoin has lost 3% in value over the past 24 hours and is trading at $111,480.<\/li>\n<li>Ethereum is down 3.6% in the same period to $4,590.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What we\u2019re reading<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">Kyle Baird is DL News\u2019 Weekend Editor.
