{"id":372320,"date":"2025-08-25T12:40:17","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T12:40:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/372320\/"},"modified":"2025-08-25T12:40:17","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T12:40:17","slug":"barcelona-social-housing-is-a-tribute-to-the-cultural-roots-of-its-inhabitants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/372320\/","title":{"rendered":"Barcelona social housing is a &#8220;tribute to the cultural roots of its inhabitants&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spanish studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/mias-architects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MIAS Architects<\/a> has renovated a historic housing block in the centre of Barcelona into a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/social-housing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social housing<\/a> apartments, defined by a bold palette of red render, patterned ceramic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/tiles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tiles<\/a> and geometric metal grilles.<\/p>\n<p>Called Lady Raval Social Housing, the block is located along the medieval Hospital Street in Barcelona&#8217;s Raval neighbourhood \u2013 one of its oldest and most densely populated urban districts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2239492 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/lady-raval-social-housing-mias-architects_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Lady Raval Social Housing in Barcelona\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Lady Raval Social Housing is located in Barcelona<\/p>\n<p>Raval is defined by its diverse immigrant population, which <a href=\"https:\/\/miasarquitectes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MIAS Architects<\/a> looked to celebrate through the incorporation of materials and decorative patterns, which it says are a &#8220;tribute to the memory and cultural roots of its inhabitants.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Diversity is one of the neighbourhood&#8217;s greatest strengths, though the area&#8217;s urban density and configuration have, at times, contributed to a sense of physical and social isolation from the rest of the city,&#8221; the studio told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2239497 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/lady-raval-social-housing-mias-architects_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Interior door of Barcelona social housing\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>MIAS Architects designed the project to &#8220;give new life to a historic building&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The driving idea behind the project was to give new life to a historic building while celebrating the diverse cultural backgrounds of its residents,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rather than imposing a new identity, the intervention sought to recover and elevate what was already there \u2013 both in architectural form and in community spirit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2239499 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/lady-raval-social-housing-mias-architects_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Facade of social housing in Barcelona\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>The architecture is defined by a bold palette of ceramic tiles and geometric metal grilles<\/p>\n<p>Central to the renovation was a reconfiguration of the building&#8217;s layout, which, due to piecemeal alterations over the years, had been left disconnected from the street and its internal courtyard.<\/p>\n<p>MIAS Architects split the building into two volumes \u2013 a smaller front block facing the street and an L-shaped block at the rear, which has enabled each apartment to be oriented towards a shared, central courtyard.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2239500 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/lady-raval-social-housing-mias-architects_dezeen_2364_col_11-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Stairwell in the social housing block in Barcelona\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>New openings were introduced to open up the block&#8217;s previously isolated stair areas<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The central courtyard is the focal point of the intervention. It becomes the shared external space to which all apartments are oriented,&#8221; said the studio.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Symbolically, it serves as the soul of the building, a collective space that represents the community within,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/04\/13\/social-housing-barcelona-mias-coll-leclerc-architects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/sq-72-social-housing-units-mias_dezeen_2364_col_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"72 Social Housing Units by MIAS and Coll-Leclerc Architects\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Red accents enliven social housing block on triangular plot in Barcelona\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>New openings were introduced to open up the block&#8217;s previously isolated stair areas, only covered with geometric metal grilles to allow in light and air.
