{"id":372417,"date":"2025-08-25T13:34:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T13:34:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/372417\/"},"modified":"2025-08-25T13:34:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T13:34:11","slug":"russia-iran-discuss-nuclear-programme-ahead-of-european-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/372417\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia, Iran discuss nuclear programme ahead of European talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<strong>The Iranian and Russian presidents discussed Tehran&#8217;s nuclear programme on Monday as European powers threaten to reimpose sanctions on Tehran over the moribund 2015 deal.<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nBritain, France, and Germany have threatened to trigger a &#8220;snapback mechanism&#8221; to reintroduce UN sanctions that were lifted under the agreement unless Iran agrees to curb its uranium enrichment and restore cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency&#8217;s (IAEA) inspectors.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIran will hold talks with the European trio in Geneva on Tuesday, Iranian state media reported.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nRussia&#8217;s Vladimir Putin held a phone call with Iran&#8217;s Masoud Pezeshkian, the Kremlin said Monday, in which the pair &#8220;touched on the situation around Iran&#8217;s nuclear programme&#8221;. It did not elaborate on what the pair discussed.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Iranian presidency said Pezeshkian had thanked Putin for supporting Tehran&#8217;s &#8220;right to enrichment&#8221; and said Iran was &#8220;not seeking, and will never seek to build nuclear weapons&#8221;.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe two countries have bolstered political, military and economic ties during Russia&#8217;s military offensive on Ukraine.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIran has regularly sought to coordinate its position with both Russia and China before key nuclear talks with the United States and Europe during the current stand-off.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nRussia&#8217;s Kommersant business paper reported Monday that Moscow opposed the idea of &#8220;snapback&#8221; sanctions.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;The threats by Britain, Germany, and France to activate the mechanism for reintroducing previously suspended UN sanctions against Iran are a serious destabilising factor,&#8221; the paper cited the foreign ministry as telling it in a statement.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nRussia is a party to the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action or JCPOA, which provided Iran with sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its nuclear programme.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nTehran disputes the legality of invoking the treaty&#8217;s snapback clause, accusing the Europeans of not honouring their own commitments under the accord.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIran suspended cooperation with the United Nations nuclear watchdog following a 12-day war with Israel earlier this year, with Tehran pointing to the IAEA&#8217;s failure to condemn Israeli and US strikes on its nuclear facilities.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n(mm)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Iranian and Russian presidents discussed Tehran&#8217;s nuclear programme on Monday as European powers threaten to reimpose sanctions&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":372418,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7655],"tags":[332],"class_list":{"0":"post-372417","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-russia","8":"tag-russia"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/115089667819484130","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/372417","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=372417"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/372417\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/372418"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=372417"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=372417"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=372417"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
