British holidaymakers who\u2019ve jetted off to Spain<\/a> for the last week of August are warned of an \u201cextreme\u201d fire risk across the country.<\/p>\n Maps shared by Aemet, Spain\u2019s national weather<\/a> agency, show the fire risk increasing throughout the week, peaking on Thursday, August 28.<\/p>\n The colour-coded maps denote the fire risk of certain areas, with red indicating an \u2018extreme risk\u2019, amber a \u2018very high\u2019, yellow a \u2018high\u2019 risk, green a moderate \u2018risk\u2019 and blue for \u2018low\u2019 risk.<\/p>\n On Monday, August 25, the map shows an extreme fire risk in the north and the east of the country.<\/p>\n Never miss a story with the MEN’s daily Catch Up newsletter – get it in your inbox by signing up here<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n Spain\u2019s Civil Protection Agency said in a post on X: \u201cVery high or extreme fire risk in wide areas of the north and east of the peninsula today, Monday 25 August. Take extreme precautions.\u201d Those who see a fire are urged to report it by calling 112.<\/p>\n By Tuesday, a large amount of the country is covered by an amber \u2018very high\u2019 risk level, with areas across the north and east under \u2018extreme\u2019 alert.<\/p>\n But the fire risk is set to increase even more as we approach the middle of the week. Large swathes of central, western and northern Spain are covered by red alerts on Wednesday, increasing to most of the country on Thursday, August 28.<\/p>\n The coastline of southern Spain is covered by the red alert, including the popular resorts of Alicante, Malaga and Marbella.<\/p>\n Some of the risk levels are lowered by Friday, although red warnings remain for northern and eastern Spain.<\/p>\n The latest wildfire warnings come as the country has endured a scorching hot summer resulting in dozens of wildfires breaking out across the country.<\/p>\n Join the Manchester Evening News <\/strong>WhatsApp<\/strong> group <\/strong>HERE<\/a><\/p>\n As of August 18, data shared by Copernicus revealed that 348,000 hectares of land had been burned by fires in Spain so far this year.<\/p>\n Regarding wildfires in Spain, the UK Foreign Office<\/a> says: \u201cWildfires happen often in Spain, including on the islands, during the summer months.<\/p>\n \u201cBe aware of your environment when visiting or driving through woodland areas. For information on wildfire risk visit the Spanish Meteorological Office (AEMET).<\/p>\n \u201cCausing a wildfire is a criminal offence in Spain, even if unintentional. Make sure cigarette ends are properly extinguished, do not light barbecues and do not leave empty bottles behind. You can be heavily fined for not following the rules against lighting outdoor barbecues in forest areas.
