{"id":372634,"date":"2025-08-25T15:33:16","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T15:33:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/372634\/"},"modified":"2025-08-25T15:33:16","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T15:33:16","slug":"what-dan-evans-was-left-confused-about-mid-way-through-playing-the-longest-match-in-us-open-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/372634\/","title":{"rendered":"What Dan Evans was left confused about mid-way through playing the longest match in US Open history"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>A year ago, Dan Evans and Karen Khachanov contested the longest US Open match of all time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The mammoth five-set encounter tested the physical and mental strength of <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/dan-evans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Evans<\/a> and Khachanov, before the British star eventually won 6-7 7-6 7-6 4-6 6-4.<\/p>\n<p>The round one match lasted five hours and 35 minutes, nine minutes longer than the previous record holder: when Stefan Edberg defeated Michael Chang in five hours and 26 minutes in the 1992 <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/us-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US Open<\/a> Men\u2019s Singles semi-finals.<\/p>\n<p>After the titanic contest, Evans described the match as \u2018crazy,\u2019 while adding that his memories of the match would only bring back positive thoughts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2168866245-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Daniel Evans of Great Britain reacts after winning a point against Karen Khachanov of Russia rduring their Men's Singles First Round match on Day Two of the 2024 US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on August 27, 2024 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City.\" class=\"wp-image-320087\" \/>Photo by Jamie Squire\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Evans also admitted that he was confused during the match.<\/p>\n<p>Dan Evans \u2018wasn\u2019t sure\u2019 what set he was in<\/p>\n<p>Remarkably, Dan Evans lost track of the score during the match, claiming he was unsure which set he and Karen Khachanov were in at one point in the match.<\/p>\n<p>As per the US Open <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usopen.org\/amp\/en_US\/news\/articles\/2024-08-27\/daniel_evans_beats_karen_khachanov_in_longest_match_in_us_open_history.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">official website<\/a>, Evans said after the match: \u201cI was trying to just play, stay out there as long as possible at 4-0 and just see where I could get myself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the longest I\u2019ve ever been on a court. In the fourth set I had to check the set to see what set we was in. I wasn\u2019t entirely sure what set we was in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[It\u2019s an] amazing feeling to have come through the match. The irony, I\u2019ve played him probably more than anybody on the tour as well. I\u2019ve played him so many times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll be proud. I\u2019ll obviously be proud. Yeah, it\u2019s just a crazy, crazy match. I guess it\u2019s one I\u2019ll remember obviously forever. I don\u2019t really know. I can\u2019t put it into words right now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The memories] will be obviously something of happiness. There will be no bad thoughts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evans would go on to reach the third round, before losing to <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/alex-de-minaur\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alex de Minaur<\/a> in four sets.<\/p>\n<p>Dan Evans loses in the first round of US Open qualifying<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for Evans, he has not competed in the US Open main draw at the 2025 tournament.<\/p>\n<p>The former British number one <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/three-british-players-all-win-on-day-one-of-us-open-qualifying-but-dan-evans-goes-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lost in the first round of US Open qualifying<\/a> in 2025 to Lloyd Harris, 4-6 6-3 5-7.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2169667684-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Daniel Evans of Great Britain reacts after losing to Alex de Minaur of Australia during their Men's Singles Third Round match on Day Six of the 2024 US Open at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on August 31, 2024 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City.\" class=\"wp-image-320098\" \/>Photo by Matthew Stockman\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Evans, who is entering the twilight of his career at 35 years of age, will hope to put the loss behind him and record a strong set of results to close out the year.<\/p>\n<p>The world number 137, <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/dan-evans-admits-what-he-may-never-get-the-chance-to-do-at-wimbledon-again-after-losing-to-novak-djokovic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">who lost to Novak Djokovic<\/a> in his last Grand Slam main draw contest, has played ATP Tour main draw matches so far this year, winning six and losing seven.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A year ago, Dan Evans and Karen Khachanov contested the longest US Open match of all time.
