The foreign ministry called his allegations \u201cunacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>French-U.S. relations have faced tensions this year <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/us-eu-trade-trump-von-der-leyen-f49188375527cac6a4d458b49f641bab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">amid Trump\u2019s trade war<\/a> and a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/un-peacekeeping-force-lebanon-israel-trump-f11b5b48425de7a7c5c91978319b9623\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">split over the future of U.N. peacekeepers in Lebanon<\/a>. France and the U.S. also have been divided on support for Ukraine in its war with Russia, but the split has eased with Trump expressing support for security guarantees and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-putin-zelenskyy-russia-ukraine-war-d0ad768453210db23fe4b108f7b87135\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a warm meeting<\/a> with Macron and other European leaders at the White House last week. <\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what to know about Charles Kushner and his summons:<\/p>\n<p>He wrote a stern letter to Macron<\/p>\n<p>In the letter released late Sunday, Kushner wrote that \u201cpublic statements haranguing Israel and gestures toward recognition of a Palestinian state embolden extremists, fuel violence and endanger Jewish life in France.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He urged Macron \u201cto act decisively: enforce hate-crime laws without exception, ensure the safety of Jewish schools, synagogues and businesses &#8230; and abandon steps that give legitimacy to Hamas and its allies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response, the French ministry said Kushner\u2019s allegations violate international law and the obligation not to interfere with the internal affairs of another country.<\/p>\n<p>The diplomatic dustup follows Macron\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/netanyahu-macron-antisemitism-france-palestinian-state-ba792f5c6875fb72ce4297d0a56f036d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rejection this past week of accusations from<\/a> Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that France\u2019s intention to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/france-recognize-palestine-state-macron-800ed63143f0653a7f215ad96f7038d3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recognize a Palestinian state<\/a> is fueling antisemitism. <\/p>\n<p>France is home to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/france-macron-rabbi-attack-antisemitism-orleans-2618957ae166c99809ccd659afb2e2e8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the largest Jewish population in Europe<\/a>; its estimated 500,000 Jews is the third-largest Jewish population in the world after Israel and the U.S., as well as approximately 1% of the national population.<\/p>\n<p>The French official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with foreign ministry policy, said the U.S. charg\u00e9 d\u2019affaires who appeared in Kushner\u2019s place Monday was told that the letter \u201cwas unacceptable,\u201d constituted interference in France\u2019s internal affairs and ignored the government\u2019s efforts on combating antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p>The White House referred comment to the State Department, whose deputy spokesperson, Tommy Pigott, said Sunday that it stood by Kushner\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s been ambassador to France since May<\/p>\n<p>When he announced his intention to nominate Kushner in November, Trump called him \u201ca tremendous business leader, philanthropist, &amp; dealmaker.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>In May, the Senate confirmed Kushner\u2019s appointment 51-45. During hearings, he told senators that he is a child of Holocaust survivors who came to the United States after World War II, and his grandmothers and other members of his family were executed by Nazis.<\/p>\n<p>As Trump has rattled traditionally solid relationships with European allies, Kushner said he appreciates the history between the two countries and is \u201cdedicated to building an even stronger relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump pardoned him in 2020<\/p>\n<p>As he prepared to leave office following his first term in December 2020, Trump <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/joe-biden-donald-trump-elections-campaigns-baghdad-a6741e5cf9032ce004c8f6751b3cc968\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pardoned<\/a> Kushner, following a years-earlier guilty plea to charges of tax evasion and witness tampering. <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/archive\/usao\/nj\/Press\/files\/pdffiles\/Older\/Information(non-conspiracy%20version)-Kushner.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prosecutors alleged<\/a> that Kushner had hatched a scheme for revenge and intimidation after discovering his brother-in-law was cooperating with federal authorities in an investigation, hiring a prostitute and arranging to have the encounter recorded with a hidden camera and sent to his own sister, the man\u2019s wife.<\/p>\n<p>After pleading guilty to 18 counts, Kushner was sentenced in 2005 to two years in prison. It was the highest sentence he could receive under a plea deal, but less than that sought by Chris Christie, the U.S. attorney for New Jersey at the time and later governor and Republican presidential candidate.<\/p>\n<p>Christie, who called it \u201cone of the most loathsome, disgusting crimes\u201d he ever prosecuted as U.S. attorney, has blamed Jared Kushner for his firing from Trump\u2019s 2016 transition team. In 2018, Charles Kushner <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/04\/01\/us\/charles-jared-kushner-white-house-real-estate.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told The New York Times<\/a> that he wasn\u2019t interested in clemency, saying he \u201cwould prefer not to have a pardon\u201d because it would garner publicity.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s Jared Kushner\u2019s father<\/p>\n<p>Kushner founded Kushner Companies, a real estate firm.
