Meanwhile, the United States has suspended the licence for a French-made vaccine against the virus following reports of serious side effects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Mainland France has seen a record number of cases of chikungunya this summer because of the spread of the tiger mosquito, which carries the virus, and is now present <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/france\/20240322-tiger-mosquitoes-now-everywhere-in-france-after-spreading-to-normandy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:nearly everywhere;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">nearly everywhere<\/a> in the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Health authorities have recently focused on Vitrolles, a suburb of Aix-en-Provence in southern France, where authorities recorded 33 cases of the virus transmitted locally \u2013 the largest outbreak ever observed in mainland France.<\/p>\n<p>Spreading beyond the tropics<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A total of 27 outbreaks involving 154 cases have been recorded in mainland France this year, according to the national health agency <a href=\"http:\/\/www.santepubliquefrance.fr\/maladies-et-traumatismes\/maladies-a-transmission-vectorielle\/chikungunya\/documents\/bulletin-national\/chikungunya-dengue-zika-et-west-nile-en-france-hexagonale.-bulletin-de-la-surveillance-renforcee-du-20-aout-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:SPF;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">SPF<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">France\u2019s Reunion Island has been facing a deadly outbreak of the tropical disease since 2024, with one third of the population estimated to have been infected, according to the World Health Organisation (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/disease-outbreak-news\/item\/2025-DON567\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:WHO;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">WHO<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yKtAP3GJ-j8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:virus has been spreading;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">virus has been spreading<\/a> in mainland France as temperatures in northern Europe have warmed, and winters are no longer cold enough to kill off the tiger mosquitoes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The mosquito, which also carries dengue fever, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/france\/20241019-local-transmissions-of-dengue-fever-reach-record-high-in-france\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:also on the rise;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">also on the rise<\/a>, is now present in over 80 of France\u2019s 101 departments, and mosquito control measures are being stepped up in areas with infections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/france\/20250416-chikungunya-virus-kills-six-on-france-s-r\u00e9union-island-as-outbreak-spreads\" class=\"link \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Chikungunya virus outbreak kills six on France&#039;s R\u00e9union Island;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Chikungunya virus outbreak kills six on France&#8217;s R\u00e9union Island<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Vaccine suspended in US<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Meanwhile, US health authorities have suspended the license for Ixchiq, a vaccine against chikungunya, made by the French company Valneva, following reports of &#8220;serious adverse events&#8221;, particularly in elderly patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Valneva obtained US approval for the vaccine in 2023, but reports of side effects have prompted reviews, including by the European Medicines Agency this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;As we determine potential next steps, and as the clear threat of chikungunya continues to escalate globally, Valneva remains fully committed to maintaining access to our vaccine as a global health tool,&#8221;
