Sprayed on the wall in blue paint behind the bins are the words: No Parking, No Dumping. \" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dvfjxj\"\/>BBC<\/p>\n<p>Croydon Council spent about \u00a31m last year clearing fly-tipped waste<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">A south London council has announced a crackdown on fly-tipping by hiring new enforcement officers to trace those who are dumping rubbish on the streets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Croydon Council, which spent about \u00a31m last year clearing fly-tipped waste, said its enforcement team has the ability to hand out on-the-spot fines for suspected crimes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Thornton Heath resident Animot Otunuga said the fly-tipped rubbish on her street was &#8220;disgusting&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Jason Perry, Croydon&#8217;s mayor, said: &#8220;We are clearing rubbish, but that&#8217;s not the point. She stands in front of fly-tipped waste on the street she lives on in Thornton Heath. \" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dvfjxj\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Thornton Heath resident Animot Otunuga said fly-tipping in the area was getting worse<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Across the street from Ms Otunuga&#8217;s home is a pile of rubbish, including a mattress, a chair and food waste.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;The stench is too much,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;I wake up in the morning open my blinds and the first thing I see is all this rubbish, it&#8217;s very disgusting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Ms Otunuga, who has lived in Thornton Heath for more than 20 years, added: &#8220;It&#8217;s getting worse. There&#8217;s a mattress there, you&#8217;ve got all sorts of things that are meant to be in the bins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;It&#8217;s not a good sight at all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Ms Otunuga said she had never seen anyone dumping the rubbish, but added: &#8220;One of the reasons why people dump things is because the council is not picking up the bins regularly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1755184337_952_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dkIvM hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/eaf4d120-802a-11f0-a34f-318be3fb0481.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Dumped waste including a mattress on its side, cardboard boxes, black bin bags and a black chair.\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dvfjxj\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Croydon&#8217;s mayor attributed the issue of fly-tipping to a &#8220;lack of social responsibility&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">As well as the mess, clearing fly-tipped waste is a drain on Croydon Council&#8217;s resources and Mr Perry said the authority would be taking a &#8220;zero tolerance approach&#8221; to the issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve put new officers on the street &#8211; eyes and ears on the street &#8211; who are going through the rubbish, looking for those addresses, so we that can go back to people find them and prosecute them,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">He attributed the issue of fly-tipping to a &#8220;lack of social responsibility&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;What we are finding increasingly is that people literally are dumping on their own doorsteps,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;It&#8217;s not a minor problem. A blue lorry is driving past, and a white van is parked up. \" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dvfjxj\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Ken Thompson said he had seen raw meat and human waste being dumped in the borough<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">He added that dumped waste left people with a negative view of their local area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;You should be proud of where you live, no matter where it is,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">On-the-spot fines for fly-tipping have risen from \u00a3400 to \u00a31,000, but the council also wants the public&#8217;s help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Mr Perry said: &#8220;We do want CCTV images.
