{"id":375938,"date":"2025-08-26T21:28:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-26T21:28:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/375938\/"},"modified":"2025-08-26T21:28:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-26T21:28:10","slug":"a-well-preserved-roman-mausoleum-unearthed-in-france","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/375938\/","title":{"rendered":"A Well-Preserved Roman Mausoleum Unearthed in France"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tA well-preserved Roman mausoleum, modeled after the famous Mausoleum of Augustus\u00a0in Rome, was discovered by archaeologists in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/saint-romain-en-gal\/\" id=\"auto-tag_saint-romain-en-gal\" data-tag=\"saint-romain-en-gal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saint-Romain-en-Gal<\/a>, near Lyon, France.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tConstructed around 50 CE, the interior of the structure measures more than 50 feet in diameter and is thought to have had 20-foot-tall ceilings. It would have been visible to those in the Roman colony Vienna and can be seen along the Rh\u00f4ne River.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThis was a person who, even in death, remained present in the world of the living,\u201d Giulia Ciucci, archaeologist and scientific director of the Saint-Romain-en-Gal museum site, told <a href=\"https:\/\/arkeonews.net\/archaeologists-uncover-exceptional-roman-mausoleum-near-lyon-modeled-after-augustus-tomb\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/arkeonews.net\/archaeologists-uncover-exceptional-roman-mausoleum-near-lyon-modeled-after-augustus-tomb\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arkeonews<\/a>. \u201cThe resemblance to the emperor\u2019s mausoleum suggests a figure of significant political power and influence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\tRelated Articles<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-1403126241.jpg\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-1403126241.jpg\" alt=\"A Roman mosaic in the archaeological site of Sabratha, picturing ancient sandals 'flip flops'. (Photo by Edoardo Fornaciari\/Getty Images)\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"\" width=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe monument\u2019s opulence and location indicate that it was likely constructed for a member of the aristocratic elite who had a strong connection with imperial authority.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt is one of only 18 mound mausoleums found in France and is the only known circular elevation monument in such well-preserved conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tNot only does the mausoleum provide a rare look at the conditions of Roman Gaul, but also provides further evidence of a connection between the two locales. (The Mausoleum of Augustus\u00a0in the Campus Martius is the massive tomb and final resting place of Rome\u2019s first emperor.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn addition to the mausoleum, archaeologists also unearthed the remains of three ancient shops that date from the 1st and 2nd centuries CE.
