Protests took place across the country this weekend outside hotels where asylum seekers were being temporarily housed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">Farage, who is friends with Trump and is known outside of the U.K. as one of the leading campaigners behind Brexit, described illegal immigration as a \u201cscourge\u201d as he outlined his <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/women-and-children-will-be-detained-under-farage-deportation-plans-13418609\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plans at a press conference<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">\u201cThe only way we will stop the boats is by detaining and deporting absolutely anyone that comes via that route,\u201d Farage said. \u201cAnd if we do that, the boats will stop coming within days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mb-0 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">His plan, which he named \u201cOperation Restoring Justice,\u201d would include the deportation of 600,000 asylum seekers, including women and children, who would be sent back to their own countries or third-party nations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">It is unclear how Farage would meet that target, however. When asylum requests were at their record high in June 2024, there were 224,742 cases in the system, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/immigration-system-statistics-year-ending-june-2025\/how-many-cases-are-in-the-uk-asylum-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">government data<\/a>.  But there are currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c10e76a3-4cf0-4e5a-bf2a-68becf0f8bd2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fewer than 100,000 people<\/a> awaiting a decision on their asylum claim. <\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">The deportations of asylum seekers and people arriving in the U.K. illegally, according to Farage\u2019s plan, would occur on arrival and with no right of appeal. To do this, Farage concedes that his party would have to bypass or withdraw from specific human rights conventions, and he specifically named repealing the 1998 Human Rights Act and leaving the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). <\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mb-0 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">Legal experts have criticized the legality and reality of Operation Restoring Justice, with former Attorney General Dominic Grieve telling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/farage-immigration-deportation-reform-law-b2813624.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Independent <\/a>that the courts would likely block the plan under British common law. Other experts note that the cost of this mass deportation effort would be astronomical<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">Farage has made clear that he is taking inspiration from Trump\u2019s aggressive crackdown on immigration in the U.S. In an interview with The Times this weekend, he<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7281034\/trump-immigration-crackdown-executive-orders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> named Trump<\/a> when discussing his plans to send asylum seekers back to countries like Afghanistan and Eritrea. Party leader Daisy Cooper<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LibDems\/status\/1960325811409498524\"> said in a statement <\/a>that \u201cWinston Churchill would be turning in his grave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">The U.K. has been hit by a wave of <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7009130\/uk-riots-immigration-lawyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anti-migrant protests in recent months<\/a>, with two days of protests <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/24\/europe\/britain-migrant-protests-asylum-latam-intl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this past weekend<\/a> targeting hotels housing asylum seekers. The protests were sparked after a hotel resident allegedly tried to kiss a 14-year-old girl and was charged with sexual assault.
