Netflix has cancelled its hit drama The Waterfront after just one series, despite the show spending five weeks the streamer’s global Top 10 for English-language series<\/p>\n

Netflix has axed new drama The Waterfront<\/a> after just one series, leaving fans devastated. The crime drama starred Holt McCallany as Harlan Buckley, the patriarch of a fishing<\/a> family who attempts to stop their empire from collapsing by becoming involved in the drug trade.<\/p>\n

The show landed on Netflix<\/a> back in June, with many binging it in one go and comparing the show to crime drama Ozark. The Waterfront quickly worked its way up the Netflix streaming chart, peaking at the top spot with 11.6 million views in its first week.<\/p>\n

It went on to spend five weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10 for English-language series and won a score of 68% on Rotten Tomatoes for its first season. It comes after Netflix users so obsessed with ‘raunchy’ show they’re watching it in one go<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, The Waterfront has been axed after one series despite its impressive ratings. The show’s creator, Kevin Williamson, wrote in a tweet: “While I\u2019m sad the Buckleys won\u2019t be back for Season 2, I\u2019m celebrating the joy that was Season 1. It was one of the best experiences of my life!”<\/p>\n

Fans have taken to X to voice their outrage with the decision, with one writing: “Really?! So disappointing. It’s a great show.” Another tweeted: “That was actually good.”<\/p>\n

A third said: “This one makes no sense because it wasn’t badly rated, wasn’t badly panned by critics, didn’t have terrible viewership numbers, was actually a pretty entertaining show and there isn’t a pandemic they can blame it on.”<\/p>\n

According to Deadline<\/a>, Netflix “didn’t feel that the viewership and the completion rate were high enough” to renew the show for a second series.<\/p>\n

The series featured an impressive cast, with Glee’s Melissa Benoist, Animal Kingdom’s Jake Weary, The Originals’ Danielle Campbell and Coyote Ugly’s Maria Bello starring in the show.<\/p>\n

It’s not the only show that has been killed off by Netflix, with the streamer cancelling reality competition Battle Camp last month<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A TV insider told The Sun: “There were so many individuals taking part in the show, with 18 contestants in total. The fact that they all charged a fee to take part and that it was filmed on location, made it unusually costly.”<\/p>\n
