{"id":375999,"date":"2025-08-26T22:01:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-26T22:01:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/375999\/"},"modified":"2025-08-26T22:01:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-26T22:01:14","slug":"giant-monster-jellyfish-found-on-uk-beach-as-swimmers-urged-to-take-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/375999\/","title":{"rendered":"Giant monster jellyfish found on UK beach as swimmers urged to &#8216;take care&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A gigantic jellyfish with tentacles that can stretch beyond 100ft has been found washed up on a beach in the UK, with swimmers being warned to steer clear<\/p>\n<p>17:12, 26 Aug 2025Updated 17:12, 26 Aug 2025<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1_lions-mane-jellyfish-underwater.jpg\" alt=\"Lion's mane jellyfish Cyanea capillata underwater in dark Alaskan water\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>The lion&#8217;s mane jellyfish can deliver a painful sting(Image: Warren A Metcalf via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Swimmers have been urged to stay vigilant for a <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/animals\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"potentially hazardous jellyfishLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">potentially hazardous jellyfish<\/a> after the enormous creature was discovered washed ashore on a UK beach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The lion&#8217;s mane jellyfish (Cyanea capillata) ranks among the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/us-news\/tourists-issued-urgent-warning-after-35449971\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"largest known jellyfish speciesLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">largest known jellyfish species<\/a>, with tentacles that can stretch beyond 100ft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">David Alexander Bowie, who spotted the purple sea creature on a beach at Nairn, near <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/inverness\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Inverness<\/a> in the Highlands, revealed that at over six feet across, the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/travel\/uk-ireland\/brits-issued-warning-uk-beaches-35480871\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"lion&#039;s mane jellyfishLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">lion&#8217;s mane jellyfish<\/a> he discovered is amongst the largest he&#8217;s ever seen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The specimen was discovered among &#8220;hundreds&#8221; of smaller jellyfish that had also been washed onto the shore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He warned: &#8220;For anyone planning a visit to the beach, this is the size of jellyfish being washed up and in the water, so take care if you are planning a <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/swimming\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">swim<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_Monster-stinging-jellyfish-that-causes-nausea-found-washed-up-on-beach.jpg\" alt=\"Monster Stinging Jellyfish\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The jellyfish was a good deal bigger than David&#8217;s dog(Image: Jam Press\/David Alexander Bowie)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">David continued: &#8220;I think they are lion&#8217;s mane. I&#8217;ve never seen one this size before. I&#8217;ve never seen them dead on the beach either. I have also found others but not quite as big.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;There a lot of smaller ones on the beach west of Nairn,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Whilst a sting from the lion&#8217;s mane jellyfish is seldom deadly on its own, the creature can trigger severe nausea, sweating and cramps which could put swimmers in danger if they&#8217;re attacked whilst offshore.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_Lions-Mane-jellyfish-underwater.jpg\" alt=\"Lion's Mane jellyfish drifting underwater in the gulf of st.Lawrence\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>A lion&#8217;s Mane jellyfish drifting underwater (Image: LaSalle-Photo via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">One local resident, after witnessing David&#8217;s discovery, observed: &#8220;That&#8217;s a lion&#8217;s mane &#8211; the bigger they are the worse the sting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">If you&#8217;re unfortunate enough to be stung by a lion&#8217;s mane jellyfish, the first thing you should do is rinse the area with vinegar. However, if the welts are particularly severe, it&#8217;s crucial to seek professional medical help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Back in July 2010, around 150 beachgoers in Rye, New Hampshire, US, were stung by what experts believe were remnants of a single lion&#8217;s mane jellyfish that had been broken up by the tide.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1756245674_806_0_Monster-stinging-jellyfish-that-causes-nausea-found-washed-up-on-beach.jpg\" alt=\"Monster Stinging Jellyfish\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>David said he had seen dozens of other, smaller jellyfish washed up on the same beach(Image: Jam Press\/David Alexander Bowie)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A lion&#8217;s mane jellyfish boasts up to 1,200 tentacles divided into eight clusters, using its painful sting to immobilise prey such as fish and other jellyfish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The largest specimen ever recorded was measured off the coast of Massachusetts in 1865, boasting a bell with a diameter of 210 centimetres (7 feet) and tentacles approximately 36.6 m (120 ft) long. Some experts consider the lion&#8217;s mane to be the longest animal in the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/world-news\/\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">world<\/a>, even surpassing the blue whale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Lion&#8217;s mane jellyfish are relatively common in the English Channel, Irish Sea, and North Sea.
