Russian forces have slowly gained ground in <strong>costly battles for largely devastated areas<\/strong> in eastern and southern Ukraine, normally with few inhabitants or intact buildings left.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Separately, Ukraine\u2019s military general staff <strong>rejected<\/strong> <strong>Moscow\u2019s claims to have fully captured the villages of Zaporizke and Novogeorgiivka<\/strong> just inside Dnipropetrovsk oblast. But battlefield monitor DeepState, which has close ties to Ukraine\u2019s military, said on Tuesday that Russia had \u201coccupied\u201d them and was \u201cconsolidating its positions [and] accumulating infantry for a further advance\u201d. Dnipropetrovsk is not one of the five Ukrainian regions \u2013 <strong>Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Crimea \u2013 that<\/strong> <strong>Moscow has illegally annexed as Russian territory<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>Ukrainian men aged 18 to 22 are now allowed to cross the border freely in either direction under martial law<\/strong>, the prime minister, Yulia Svyrydenko, has announced. \u201cThis applies to all citizens in this age group. The decision also concerns citizens who, for various reasons, are located outside Ukraine,\u201d said Svyrydenko. \u201cWe want Ukrainians to maintain a maximum of links with Ukraine.\u201d Previous regulations introduced after Russia\u2019s February 2022 invasion <strong>barred men aged 18-60 from leaving the country<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he had met with military leadership about the situation at the frontline and in the border areas<\/strong>. \u201cWe discussed in detail the key needs of each direction and units. It is very important that the nature of the <strong>situation in the border areas of Sumy and Kharkiv regions<\/strong> is determined by our units.\u201d Ukraine\u2019s president added: \u201cOf course, we pay <strong>due attention to the Donetsk and Zaporizhia regions<\/strong>. We discussed the needs for additional supplies for these directions. The commander-in-chief reported on the implementation of the headquarters\u2019 decisions on providing reserves for the defence forces.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Zelenskyy said contact was being made with <strong>Turkey, the Gulf states and European countries<\/strong> about hosting talks if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/vladimir-putin\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vladimir Putin<\/a> ended up agreeing. \u201cFrom our side, things will be prepared to the maximum in order to end the war,\u201d said the Ukrainian president. <strong>Ukrainian top presidential aide Andriy Yermak and national security council chief Rustem Umerov<\/strong> were in Doha on Tuesday meeting with the Qataris.<strong> <\/strong>Zelenskyy added: \u201cRussia is only giving signals that it is going to continue to avoid real negotiations. This can only be changed by strong sanctions, strong tariffs \u2013 real pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>The Finnish president,<\/strong> <strong>Alexander Stubb,<\/strong> <strong>said he hoped Donald Trump\u2019s patience with Putin would run out soon. <\/strong>Stubb said he had warned Trump that <strong>Putin was deploying a \u201ctypical\u201d Russian delaying tactic<\/strong> to avoid meeting Zelenskyy. <strong>Finland and other European countries \u201cwill do everything we can do achieve lasting peace\u201d, Stubb said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On <strong>security guarantees for Ukraine<\/strong>, Zelenskyy said their \u201cdefence component \u2026 should be detailed in the near future\u201d. In Brussels on Tuesday, the EU foreign affairs spokesperson Anitta Hipper said the EU\u2019s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, had<strong> <\/strong>overnight been on a call with Marco Rubio, the US secretary of state, and several European foreign ministers. European Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho said there should soon be a <strong>report from national security advisers on what would be put forward for Ukraine\u2019s security<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>A combat drone, presumed to be Ukrainian, went off course and exploded over Estonia without causing any casualties<\/strong>, the Baltic state and close Ukraine ally said on Tuesday, AFP reported. Pieces were found by an agricultural worker near the south-eastern town of Tartu, 75km (45 miles) from the border with Russia.
