Major redevelopment plans for a Birmingham school \u2018heavily affected\u2019 by RAAC have been recommended for approval.<\/p>\n
Permission is being sought for a new, two-storey building at Baskerville School in Harborne<\/a>, which provides specialist education for pupils with autism.<\/p>\n Existing buildings on the site would also be demolished if the proposals are given the green light by council<\/a> planners later this week.<\/p>\n READ MORE: <\/strong>11 ways Aston Villa plan to improve matchday travel amid stadium expansion proposals<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n A report said the school<\/a> site suffered from the presence of RAAC, the lightweight concrete used in the construction of many buildings between the 1950s and 1990s.<\/p>\n It said it had \u201csignificantly compromised\u201d the functionality of the school.<\/p>\n \u201cIn order to address the most pressing aspects of RAAC, a phased approach to the development is being sought,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n The report said the plans would also address \u201csignificant concerns\u201d over inadequate parking, leading to congestion and mini-buses waiting on nearby Fellows Lane.<\/p>\n \u201cThe proposal would make a positive visual contribution to the site, as well as helping to address the level of congestion experienced on Fellows Lane through the revised parking layout,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n \u201c[This] comprises of additional circulation space and mini-bus parking, ensuring that mini-buses can park within the site, rather than parking and waiting on Fellows Lane.<\/p>\n \u201cNot only would this assist with existing congestion but would also ensure safer pick up and drop off provision for pupils.\u201d<\/p>\n The document said concerns had been raised by a resident that the two-storey building would be \u201cimposing\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cA two-storey building currently presents to the front of the site,\u201d it continued. \u201cThe proposal would be set slightly further back.\u201d<\/p>\n It said the height of the proposed building would be consistent with the \u2018scale and massing\u2019 of homes along Fellows Lane.<\/p>\n![\"Baskerville](\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_Harborne-School-2PNG.png\")
