The council said NH has &#8220;gone back on its commitment&#8221; to replace the footbridge over A5036 in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/bootle\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bootle<\/a> and accused it of disregarding the wishes of the local community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The A5036 is a busy road that divides two residential areas on its route to and from the port of Liverpool and sees a huge amount of traffic, especially at peak times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In October 2022 the footbridge over Park Lane, in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/netherton\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Netherton<\/a>, was found to be \u201cno longer safe for pedestrians to use\u201d after a <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/main-road-close-weekend-unsafe-25308789\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">lorry hit it earlier in the same month<\/a>. A decision was then taken to demolish the bridge over the A5036 which was completed two weeks after the initial collision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">At the time, the council said the footbridge had provided a \u201cvital crossing point for the local community and amenities such as Our Lady of Walsingham Primary School\u201d. Furthermore, NH confirmed its intention to address that loss and said the best and safest option was to \u201creplace the bridge completely\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">However, in October 2024, the Liverpool <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">ECHO<\/a> reported on <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/children-frightened-death-crossing-road-30185841\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">comments made by Bootle MP Peter Dowd<\/a>, who criticised NH&#8217;s decision not to construct a bridge over the A5036. Mr Dowd accused the government body of &#8220;inappropriate&#8221; behaviour, &#8220;failing&#8221; local residents, and displaying a &#8220;complete lack of respect&#8221; for local officials.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_Dunnings-Bridge-Road-closed-after-a-lorry-hit-the-bridgeAndrew-Teebay.jpg\" alt=\"Police close off Dunnings Bridge Road after a lorry hit a footbridge\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Police close off Dunnings Bridge Road after a lorry hit a footbridge(Image: Andrew Teebay Liverpool Echo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He added: \u201cThey decided\u2014as it said in the document\u2014that a footbridge is a 20th-century solution. Try telling that to all those children who are frightened to death to walk across the road, even with their parents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The proposals for a footbridge have now been formally rejected, which prompted the council to offer its response to the &#8220;frustrating&#8221; turn of events. The council said it is unhappy with NH&#8217;s decision not to replace the footbridge on the A5036, especially after its commitment to do so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Responding to NH &#8220;changing its mind&#8221; and updated proposals for a crossing, council leader, Cllr Marion Atkinson, said: \u201cOur position hasn\u2019t changed since our statement in 2023, when we made it clear the bridge should be replaced, so it is hugely frustrating that National Highways is continuing with their plans to put in a crossing instead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThey have not engaged with us, and more importantly, they have failed to consult the local community \u2013 the very people who will be most affected by this decision. They simply told us they had changed their mind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe have listened to local people, and they have made it very clear they want a bridge.
