An embarrassing display saw Leeds United suffer another blow to their campaign after losing to Championship side, Sheffield Wednesday, in the Carabao Cup.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Wednesday played to an empty-looking Hillsborough due to ongoing fan protests and fielded a starting XI of youngsters, but they still deserved to advance to the third round.<\/p>\n

The Owls\u2019 Jamal Lowe gave the hosts the lead thanks to a\u00a0Karl Darlow<\/a>\u00a0error, but it looked as if\u00a0Daniel Farke\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0side would turn it around when\u00a0Jayden Bogle<\/a>\u00a0levelled the score.<\/p>\n

Dominic Calvert-Lewin had a hat-trick of chances,<\/a>\u00a0but it wasn\u2019t enough and it was down to penalties, which couldn\u2019t have gone any worse for Leeds.<\/p>\n

Opta\u2019s Jonny Copper shared on X<\/a> that last night Leeds United became just the second top-flight team in League Cup history to fail to score a single penalty in a penalty shootout. <\/p>\n

The last side to do this were Manchester City in September 2005 vs Doncaster Rovers.<\/p>\n

There aren\u2019t many statistics Leeds will sit alongside Man City for, but this is one Daniel Farke will not welcome.<\/p>\n

The game went straight to penalties and with\u00a0Joel Piroe, Calvert-Lewin and Sean Longstaff<\/a>\u00a0all missing from the spot, the Whites lost 3-0 after failing to score in a shootout for the first time in their\u00a0history.<\/a><\/p>\n

Leeds United\u2019s recent Premier League penalty history<\/p>\n

Over their last two seasons in the Premier League<\/a>, Leeds United\u2019s penalty record was relatively strong, in contrast to their recent Carabao Cup display.<\/p>\n

In the 2021-2022 season, Leeds were awarded a total of five penalties. Of those, four were scored by the team\u2019s top scorer, Raphinha<\/a>, while the other was converted by Rodrigo<\/a>. This gave them a respectable 100% conversion rate and a clear, reliable penalty taker.<\/p>\n

Following that campaign, the 2022-2023 season, was a different story. Leeds were awarded four Premier League penalties. Rodrigo scored the club\u2019s only successful spot-kick that season. <\/p>\n

The record was soured by Patrick Bamford<\/a>, who missed two penalties\u2014one against Arsenal and another against Newcastle\u2014which proved costly in Leeds\u2019 campaign that ended in relegation.<\/p>\n

In short, the club\u2019s Premier League penalty record had been solid, with Raphinha as a dependable taker.
