{"id":377465,"date":"2025-08-27T11:17:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T11:17:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/377465\/"},"modified":"2025-08-27T11:17:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T11:17:14","slug":"why-we-might-expect-australias-next-dietary-guidelines-to-incorporate-the-environment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/377465\/","title":{"rendered":"Why we might expect Australia&#8217;s next dietary guidelines to incorporate the environment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">For many Australians, our first contact with official dietary guidelines was the food pyramid, which had fruit, veggies, and carbs as its base, and fats and sugar at the very top.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Over the decades, the various blocks that made up the food pyramid shifted slightly. It recently got a makeover and is now the &#8220;healthy eating plate&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But the plate is based on <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.gov.au\/resources\/publications\/the-australian-dietary-guidelines?language=en\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guidelines published back in 2013<\/a>, which are due for an update. They&#8217;re currently under revision to take into account the latest nutrition research, and are expected to be published next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While we don&#8217;t know what the new guidelines will say, we can look overseas to see what the latest dietary guidelines of other countries include.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">And one issue pops up time and again: the health of the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Sustainability in newer dietary guidelines<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Over the past five years or so, new dietary recommendations from elsewhere around the world haven&#8217;t just addressed human health \u2014 they&#8217;ve incorporated the health of the planet too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Production of certain food groups, such as red meat, have a relatively higher environmental impact \u2014 on carbon emissions, land use and biodiversity loss \u2014 than others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In 2019, a group of researchers, called the <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/eatforum.org\/eat-lancet-commission\/the-planetary-health-diet-and-you\/\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EAT-Lancet Commission, published the planetary health diet<\/a>. It&#8217;s designed to be adapted for different countries and cultures, and is a &#8220;plant-forward&#8221; diet, where most foods are whole grains, fruit, vegetables, nuts and legumes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-06-23\/dietary-fibre-digestion-what-to-know-tiktok\/105433084\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How to get the fibre you need<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">People share a lot of their lives on social media. This can even include digestion details, with content about &#8220;staying regular&#8221;, bloating and fibre far from off-limits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While red meat is not off the table, the planetary health diet suggests people eat no more than 98 grams of red meat each week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That&#8217;s about a third of what the current Australian Guide to Healthy Eating recommends,&#8221; Jessica Danaher, a RMIT University dietitian and nutrition scientist, says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/en.fvm.dk\/news-and-contact\/focus-on\/the-danish-official-dietary-guidelines\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Danish dietary guidelines, published in 2020<\/a>, also emphasise climate-friendly, plant-rich eating. They suggest people eat less meat, and choose fish and legumes instead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Other sets of <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/pub.norden.org\/nord2023-003\/nord2023-003.pdf\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dietary guidelines<\/a> also <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ruokavirasto.fi\/en\/foodstuffs\/healthy-diet\/nutrition-and-food-recommendations\/\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explicitly incorporate<\/a> <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tewhatuora.govt.nz\/assets\/For-the-health-sector\/Health-sector-guidance\/Active-Families\/eating-activity-guidelines-new-zealand-adults-updated-2020-oct22.pdf\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">environmental sustainability<\/a>, but not all. <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.helsenorge.no\/en\/kosthold-og-ernaring\/dietary-guidelines\/\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Norway&#8217;s guidelines<\/a>, while being similar to the Danish guidelines, don&#8217;t mention the environment at all (but do suggest people &#8220;eat with pleasure and make time to sit down and eat&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">So will we see a focus on planetary health in the next iteration of the Australian Dietary Guidelines?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Danaher suspects so: &#8220;[We may be] shifting towards looking at health from a more holistic perspective as opposed to just looking at the clinical perspective or nutritional adequacy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What are the current Australian dietary guidelines?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">You may be wondering what our current recommendations even are.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">They include recommendations about breastfeeding and food safety, but <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eatforhealth.gov.au\/guidelines\/australian-dietary-guidelines-1-5\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mostly focus on people eating a variety of nutritious foods<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The visual representation of our guidelines is called the <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eatforhealth.gov.au\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-10\/n55_agthe_large.pdf\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australian guide to healthy eating plate<\/a>, and it&#8217;s divvied up into five food groups.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Colourful image of vegetables, fruits, grain, nuts, dairy and meats.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/ea9aba59c1fcc0725838f96b53bdd567\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The five food groups include vegetables, fruit, grain, protein and dairy. (Getty Images: fcafotodigital)<\/p>\n<p>What is a &#8216;serve&#8217;?<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ContentAlignment_marginBottom__4H_6E ContentAlignment_overflowVisible__N2zKU\">\n<li>Vegetables: half a cup cooked green or orange vegetables, 1 cup raw salad vegetables, or 1 medium tomato<\/li>\n<li>Fruit: 1 medium apple, two small plums, or 1 cup canned fruit (no added sugar)<\/li>\n<li>Grain (cereal) food: 1 slice of bread, half a cup cooked rice, pasta or noodles, or quarter of a cup muesli<\/li>\n<li>Protein: 65 grams cooked lean red meat, 2 large eggs, or 1 cup cooked or canned legumes<\/li>\n<li>Dairy: 1 cup fresh milk or calcium-enriched plant-based milk, 2 slices of cheese, or three quarters of a cup yoghurt<\/li>\n<li>Recommended daily minimum serves of these five food groups vary with age and sex<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Source: <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eatforhealth.gov.au\/food-essentials\/how-much-do-we-need-each-day\/serve-sizes\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eat For Health<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It comprises around a third of grain-based foods, a third veggies and legumes, and the rest split roughly between fruit, lean protein, and dairy and dairy-alternatives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Discretionary foods&#8221; such as chips, chocolate, cream and soft drinks are recommended to be eaten &#8220;sometimes and in small amounts&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Despite being portrayed as a single meal, the healthy eating plate is not designed to show you what you should be eating every meal, Dr Danaher says.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not so much about ticking that off every single day, but more of what it looks like, say, over the space of a few days or a week.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">For instance, the guidelines recommend no more than two serves of &#8220;discretionary foods&#8221; every day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;One quarter of a pie at the footy is a serve of discretionary foods, so my whole pie is doubling the daily recommendations,&#8221; Dr Danaher says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But I&#8217;m not going to eat half my pie and chuck it in the bin and go, &#8216;Oh, I&#8217;ve met my pie limit for today&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I&#8217;ll have that whole pie, but I&#8217;m not eating a pie every single day.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>How many people meet the current Australian dietary guidelines?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The fruit and vegetable sections recommend people aged nine years or older eat two serves of fruit and at least five serves of vegetables every day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, only <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/statistics\/health\/health-conditions-and-risks\/dietary-behaviour\/latest-release#adult-fruit-and-vegetable-consumption\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">4.2 per cent of Australian adults met the recommended targets<\/a> for both fruit and vegetables in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That may seem incredibly low, but the Australian dietary guidelines are just that \u2014 guidelines, Dr Danaher says.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-03-19\/less-fruit-vegetables-more-discretionary-food-by-2030-study\/105061998\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aussie to eat more junk by 2030, study finds <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The CSIRO says the average Australian&#8217;s diet is likely to get worse within five years, hurting our health and the taxpayers&#8217; purse.
