{"id":377681,"date":"2025-08-27T13:10:16","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T13:10:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/377681\/"},"modified":"2025-08-27T13:10:16","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T13:10:16","slug":"southend-council-set-on-free-bulky-waste-disposal-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/377681\/","title":{"rendered":"Southend council set on free bulky waste disposal service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  On Tuesday the council\u2019s cabinet will meet to discuss plans to revamp and enhance the current bulky waste service in a bid to reduce fly-tipping and increase recycling in the city.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Under the current system, residents can book a bulky waste collection for up to five items but are charged per item.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  If the new system is approved, residents will benefit from one free collection of up to five items per household per financial year.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The decision is largely to encourage improved recycling and to reduce the impact and frequency of fly tipping in Southend.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  If approved, the new bulky waste collections are set to be rolled out in October alongside the new wheelie bin collections.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Lydia Hyde, councillor for climate, environment and waste, said: &#8220;This was a key promise on our manifesto and is the final one, so we&#8217;re pleased to deliver on our promise.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;This is something we believe will help residents get rid of bulky waste in an affordable and responsible way.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;There are some limitations of the service, to not get completely abused, but we are offering more than the Medway model we&#8217;ve based it on.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;I hope this will lower fly-tipping instances, and be better for those with a barrier of financial ability to dispose responsibly.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;This is part of our civic pride agenda and we&#8217;re absolutely delighted to start on October 28th.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Bulky items classify as anything too large for standard waste disposal services to manage, such as fridges, mattresses and other household furniture.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The new free bulky waste collections form part of Southend Council\u2019s new waste contract with Suez UK.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Under the eight year contract, worth \u00a318million a year, residents will transition to wheeled bin collections and improved services including a new resident mobile phone app.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The proposed free element for the bulky waste collection service is based on the success of the service as implemented by Medway council, providing one free collection with a fixed charge per additional booking.\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  This method will be assessed at the end of the first three months of the scheme, and again at six months, to determine it\u2019s success in curbing fly-tipping.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"On Tuesday the council\u2019s cabinet will meet to discuss plans to revamp and enhance the current bulky waste&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":377682,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3843],"tags":[728,70,16,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-377681","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-environment","8":"tag-environment","9":"tag-science","10":"tag-uk","11":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/115100898409647973","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/377681","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=377681"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/377681\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/377682"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=377681"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=377681"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=377681"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
