{"id":378523,"date":"2025-08-27T20:33:20","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T20:33:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/378523\/"},"modified":"2025-08-27T20:33:20","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T20:33:20","slug":"51-1-arquitectos-creates-pink-concrete-convent-in-peru","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/378523\/","title":{"rendered":"51-1 Arquitectos creates pink concrete convent in Peru"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Local studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/51-1-arquitectos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">51-1 Arquitectos<\/a> has stacked a vertical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/convents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">convent<\/a> made of pink-coloured concrete and grey brick screens onto an urban site in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/lima\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lima<\/a>, Peru.<\/p>\n<p>The Religiosas de Maria Inmaculada was completed as a contemporary alternative to an ancient building type.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2240661 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/religiosas-de-maria-inmaculada-peru-51-1-arquitectos_dezeen_2364_col_30-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Religiosas de Maria Inmaculada by 51-1 Arquitectos\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>51-1 Arquitectos has completed a convent in Lima<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/51-1.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">51-1 Arquitectos<\/a> constructed a 6,226-square metre (67,000-square foot) project on a quarter-acre plot that houses both residences for the Sisters of Mary Immaculate Congregation and the Young Women Shelter Home &amp; Productive Technical Center.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Creating a building with an open street level could be a good opportunity for the Sisters of Mary Immaculate to show their generous spirit and leadership as an alternative development of creating public spaces in private land,&#8221; the studio said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2240656 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/religiosas-de-maria-inmaculada-peru-51-1-arquitectos_dezeen_2364_col_26-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"51-1 Arquitectos convent\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>The building is partially made of pink concrete<\/p>\n<p>The bottom two levels approached from the street are characterised by pink concrete with vertical board markings.<\/p>\n<p>Tipping outward over an angled reflecting pool, the corner of the building is punctured by a cross.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2240673 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/religiosas-de-maria-inmaculada-peru-51-1-arquitectos_dezeen_2364_col_43-852x1172.jpg\" alt=\"Lima convent by 51-1 Arquitectos\" width=\"1719\" height=\"2364\"  \/>An atrium cuts through the centre of the building<\/p>\n<p>Double-height parabolic arches open the facade to the diverse public programming \u2013 including workshop spaces for sewing, baking, hairdressing and computational design courses.<\/p>\n<p>The third level, recessed slightly in dark cladding, is a private intermediary level for refectories and a private courtyard in the back corner for the nuns, while the upper levels are divided between sleeping quarters for the women&#8217;s shelter and the sisters&#8217; residences.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2240646 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/religiosas-de-maria-inmaculada-peru-51-1-arquitectos_dezeen_2364_col_16-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Religiosas de Maria Inmaculada in Peru\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>The diverse program includes workshop spaces for sewing, baking, hairdressing and computational design courses<\/p>\n<p>The residential levels are enclosed in a brick lattice with a circular and cross pattern that allows light into the sleeping quarters but protects and provides privacy for the residents, the studio explained.<\/p>\n<p>The brise soleil allows ventilation in rooms and down corridors as the building has no air conditioning in its mild climate.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2020\/01\/13\/gastronomy-hospitality-school-51-1-culinary-school-peru\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/gastronomy-and-hospitality-school-51-1-lima-peru_dezeen_sq-a-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Gastronomy and Hospitality School by 51-1\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> 51-1 gives culinary school in Peru an industrial aesthetic\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The project is topped with terraces, laundries, an orchard and recreation spaces for the residents.<\/p>\n<p>A large rectangular atrium is cut through the center of the building, allowing light and air throughout the levels. Atop the second-floor railing, a planter allows vines to cascade down the pink interior walls of the atrium.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2240675 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/religiosas-de-maria-inmaculada-peru-51-1-arquitectos_dezeen_2364_col_44-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Lima convent by 51-1 Arquitectos\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>The facade has a cross carved into its side<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Due to the charitable nature of the institution, every effort has been made to minimise service and maintenance costs and consider the most durable materials available,&#8221; the studio said.<\/p>\n<p>51-1 Arquitectos, named for Lima&#8217;s dialling code, was founded in 2005 by partners Cesar Becerra, Fernando Puente Arnao and Manuel de Rivero.
