{"id":378636,"date":"2025-08-27T21:33:16","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T21:33:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/378636\/"},"modified":"2025-08-27T21:33:16","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T21:33:16","slug":"germany-wants-four-more-p-8a-poseidons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/378636\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany Wants Four More P-8A Poseidons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Germany has already eight P-8A Poseidons on contract, the first of which is expected to be delivered this year.<\/p>\n<p>Germany is likely to ask for additional four P-8A Poseidon Multimission Maritime Aircraft (MMA), based on the funding sought in latest defense budget requests and the Bundeswehr\u2019s latest naval plan \u2013 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bundeswehr.de\/resource\/blob\/5939752\/c083fa236013e9dfdad9b8bba0049a35\/kurs-marine-2025-broschuere-final-data.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kurs Marine 2025<\/a>. The country has already ordered eight Poseidons and the additional planned purchase, if approved, would be in line with enhanced roles within NATO in the North Atlantic and the North Seas.<\/p>\n<p>This could also mark the natural death of the Franco-German Maritime Airborne Warfare System (MAWS) program intended to develop substitutes for the two countries\u2019 aging Breguet Atlantique ATL2s and <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2021\/09\/16\/mhd-esg-p-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">P-3C Orion<\/a>s. Only two German P-3Cs remain in service, as well as 22 French Atlantique 2.<\/p>\n<p>The Bundeswehr <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2025\/02\/08\/first-german-navy-p-8a-poseidon-unveiled\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revealed<\/a> in February 2025 the first of the German Navy\u2019s (Deutsche Marine) eight Boeing P-8As, sporting full German colors and markings at Boeing\u2019s factory in Seattle, Washington. Bearing the tail number 170528 and registration 63+01, this was the first of eight aircraft that Berlin contracted in a recent Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program and is due to reach Germany in a few months, following functionalities\u2019 testing.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The Procurement Agency for the German Armed Forces (BAAINBw) and the German Navy stopped by the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/P8?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#P8<\/a> finishing center to check on the progress of their first P-8A Poseidon. Hear why the service says it\u2019ll be an \u201cawesome feeling\u201d to receive the first sub hunter later this year. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/w3tyGpn3GA\">pic.twitter.com\/w3tyGpn3GA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Boeing Defense (@BoeingDefense) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BoeingDefense\/status\/1945191793043165406?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">July 15, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Draft budget<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartpunkt.de\/seefernaufklaerer-bekommt-die-marine-weitere-p-8a-poseidon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hartpunkt<\/a> reported on Aug. 22, 2025, an allocation request of \u20ac2.8 billion in \u201ccommitment appropriations\u201d in the 2026 budget framework, earmarked for the P-8A in the years from 2028 to 2032. The report contrasts this figure with the significantly lower \u20ac700 million in the 2025 draft budget for the years from 2028 to 2030 submitted to the Parliament (Bundestag).<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2021\/07\/04\/germany-p-8a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first five aircraft<\/a> were contracted in June 2021 for \u20ac1.43 billion, with three more worth \u20ac1.1 billion added in November 2023. This has led observers to conclude that this jump in commitment authorizations is not only meant for equipment like buoys, torpedoes, or simulators for the P-8A, \u201cbut also additional aircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExperts have reported that the Navy has an additional need for at least four additional maritime patrol aircraft of this type,\u201d Hartpunkt added.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">First <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BoeingDefense?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@BoeingDefense<\/a> P-8 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Poseidon?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#Poseidon<\/a> for the German Naval Air Arm <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/deutschemarine?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@deutschemarine<\/a> has made its first flight in Seattle. In another illustrative chart listing the German Navy\u2019s \u201ctarget inventory\u201d by 2035, the number of P-8As, along with a MALE-class drone that resembles the <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2025\/03\/01\/mq-9b-seaguardian-sonobuoy-dispensing-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MQ-9B SeaGuardian<\/a>, has been increased from the previous eight, to \u201c8-12.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These are classified as \u201cReconnaissance &amp; Underwater Warfare\u201d systems. Those systems in the chart colored white are the ones Germany presently has not yet acquired, and it indicates that it is eyeing U.S.-made UAVs and might make a decision in the future.<\/p>\n<p>While Hartpunkt clarifies that the budget has yet to be approved, the Bundeshwehr\u2019s intent to increase its P-8A fleet is clear. (Image credit: Bundeswehr)<br \/>\n<strong>German-French MAWS program<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Bundeswehr said in 2021 that the acquisition of the P-8As was an interim solution to meet the ten-year capability gap that would arise after retiring the P-3Cs by 2025 and the Franco-German Maritime Airborne Warfare System (MAWS) not scheduled to come online by 2035. The MAWS project envisaged Airbus and Dassault Aviation jointly developing a successor to the P-3C and the <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2017\/09\/21\/the-italian-air-force-bids-farewell-to-the-breguet-br-1150-atlantic-mpa-with-a-special-color-aircraft-welcomes-the-new-leonardo-p-72a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Breguet Atlantique<\/a> ATL2.<\/p>\n<p>In September 2023, Germany <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navalnews.com\/naval-news\/2023\/09\/germany-hands-over-six-p-3c-orion-mpa-to-portugal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approved<\/a> the sale of six of its eight P-3C CUP (Capability Upgrade Program) Orions to Portugal for $48.5 million, which Lisbon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.janes.com\/osint-insights\/defence-news\/defence\/portugal-receives-former-german-orion-mpa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">received<\/a> on Feb. 9, 2024. The P-3C Orions were operated by the 3rd Naval Air Wing \u201cGraf Zeppelin\u201d at Nordholz in the northeast. Only two P-3C Orions are currently operational until the Poseidons arrive.<\/p>\n<p>In the intervening period, Germany also declined the French offer of four ATL2s upgraded to Standard 6, dealing a blow to the MAWS. Little has moved forward since then.<\/p>\n<p>Airbus then <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2024\/11\/13\/airbus-reveals-a321-mpa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unveiled<\/a> the A321 MPA (Maritime Patrol Aircraft) in November 2024 and launched a 24-month risk assessment and reduction study, to ease the transition between the concept and production phases which was expected in <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2025\/02\/06\/airbus-a321-mpa-study-french-navy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">February 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\ud835\udc00\ud835\udc08\ud835\udc11\ud835\udc12\ud835\udc07\ud835\udc0e\ud835\udc16 \ud835\udc0d\ud835\udc04\ud835\udc16\ud835\udc12: The German Navy will be providing a single Lockheed P-3C Orion four-engined, turboprop anti-submarine and maritime surveillance aircraft for the static display at the Vaasa Airshow on the 15th and 16th of June <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jwIr5K0UHF\">pic.twitter.com\/jwIr5K0UHF<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 European Airshows (@EuroAirshow) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EuroAirshow\/status\/1792591202824368263?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">May 20, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>By all indications, France seems to be going alone and the A321 might become its new MPA to replace the 22 <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2017\/09\/21\/the-italian-air-force-bids-farewell-to-the-breguet-br-1150-atlantic-mpa-with-a-special-color-aircraft-welcomes-the-new-leonardo-p-72a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Breguet Atlantique<\/a> ATL2s after 2030 under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gouv.fr\/dga\/actualites\/dga-lance-deux-etudes-darchitectures-lavion-patrouille-maritime-futur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patmar<\/a> (Patrouille Maritime) program. Maritime Patrol Aircraft could therefore be another military program feeding the broader diplomatic rift between Paris and Berlin, after the <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2025\/07\/13\/dassault-seeks-80percent-fcas-workshare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FCAS<\/a> (Future Combat Air System) and air defense systems for Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The P-8A is also a more globally popular aircraft, operated by nine countries. Including Canada as a future user, it is flown by the U.S., Germany, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, India and South Korea. A total of 172 P-8s are flying today, collectively clocking 660,000 flight hours as of 2024, according to Boeing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>P-8A capability<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Deutsche Marine crews are already undergoing training at NAS (Naval Air Station) Jacksonville, Florida, home to the U.S. Navy\u2019s VP-8 (Patrol Squadron 8), as part of a six-month course, said a Jul. 31 Bundeswehr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bundeswehr.de\/en\/news\/the-p-8a-poseidon-maritime-patrol-reconnaissance-aircraft-training-for-german-naval-aviators-in-the-usa-5981216\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a>. The service mentioned that the German P-3C fleet, developed in the 1960s and inducted in the Deutsche Marine in 2006, has been \u201cgradually shrinking\u201d over the years, and the last two aircraft are now \u201cfacing their final days in service.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\ud83c\udde9\ud83c\uddea\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf8\u2708\ufe0f The first Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft for the German Navy has been completed. The emergency procedures and the method of \u201cadjusting the radar or dropping torpedoes and sonar buoys\u201d are also radically different.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the Boeing 737, the P-8A is equipped with a Raytheon AN\/APY-10 multi-target surface radar, an AN\/APS-128 synthetic aperture radar and an AN\/ALR-73 passive detection system. The AN\/ALQ-240(V)1 ESM (Electronic Support Measures) array on the cheeks give elementary ELINT\/EW (Electronic Intelligence\/Electronic Warfare) capability.<\/p>\n<p>The P-8 can be armed with Mk-50 torpedoes, Mk-57 and Mk-101 depth charges, Mk-55 and Mk-56 mines and AGM-84 Harpoon missiles.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The first P-8A for German Marineflieger received its paintjob in Seattle, WA.
