{"id":378644,"date":"2025-08-27T21:37:15","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T21:37:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/378644\/"},"modified":"2025-08-27T21:37:15","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T21:37:15","slug":"european-union-tells-trump-to-step-off-in-spat-over-social-media-rules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/378644\/","title":{"rendered":"European Union tells Trump to step off in spat over social media rules"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/author\/jahan-jones-ncpn371241\" tabindex=\"-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/jahan-jones-msnbc_1.png\" alt=\"\" height=\"48\" width=\"48\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-bf786d\" class=\"body-graf\">The European Union has told the United States to step off as the Trump administration tries to intimidate its members out of regulating social media companies. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a29bd9\" class=\"body-graf\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/top-stories\/latest\/trump-starmer-uber-chatgpt-tea-boeing-doge-rcna221847\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">As I\u2019ve reported previously<\/a>, the administration and some of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/03\/technology\/eu-penalties-x-elon-musk.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allies in Big Tech<\/a> have objected to European regulations, like the Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act, that are meant to curb the dissemination of disinformation, hate speech and abusive content targeting children on social media platforms. Opponents of these rules claim they are either <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/08\/26\/business\/trump-technology-european-union-tariffs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">burdensome on tech companies<\/a> or an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/07\/22\/state-department-attacks-europe-free-speech-00468916\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">affront to free speech<\/a> \u2014 a truly ironic claim coming from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/03\/06\/nx-s1-5317739\/president-trump-said-he-brought-back-free-speech-some-of-his-actions-contradict-that\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a censorship-happy Trump administration<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-25fa59\" class=\"body-graf\">After a Truth Social <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/115092243259973570\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post<\/a> on Tuesday in which Trump threatened to institute \u201csubstantial\u201d tariffs and withhold highly coveted computer chips from countries that regulate American technology, a spokesperson for the E.U.\u2019s executive body appeared to brush off Trump\u2019s threats. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c121d7\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cIt is the sovereign right of the EU and its member states to regulate economic activities on our territory, which are consistent with our democratic values,\u201d said European Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-resists-trump-tech-regulation-is-our-sovereign-right\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to a Politico report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f47b9d\" class=\"body-graf\">Another commission spokesperson disputed Trump\u2019s claim that American companies are being singled out:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"blockquote__quote\" cite=\"\">\n<p>Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier insisted that the rules are neutral. \u2018The DSA does not look at the color of a company, at the jurisdiction of a company, nor the owner of a company,\u2019 he said. \u2018The DSA and the DMA both apply to all platforms and companies operating in the EU irrespective of their place of establishment \u2026 The last three enforcement decisions that we took were against AliExpress, Temu and against TikTok.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"anchor-949a8e\" class=\"body-graf\">Elsewhere, the Trump administration has cited Brazil\u2019s content moderation laws \u2014 which are intended to curb misinformation and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2025\/04\/14\/the-brazilian-judge-taking-on-the-digital-far-right\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> have been used against MAGA-friendly extremists<\/a> \u2014 as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2025\/07\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-addresses-threats-to-the-united-states-from-the-government-of-brazil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one reason for tariffs against that nation<\/a>. Americans might do well to remember that choice the next time they\u2019re sipping an overpriced cup of Brazilian coffee and wondering whether <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/aug\/16\/coffee-shops-brazil-trump-tariffs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the tariff-driven price hike<\/a> is worth it to ensure right-wing extremists in a foreign country have free rein on social media.
