EU\u00a0foreign ministers are scheduled to\u00a0meet in\u00a0Copenhagen later this week, where they are expected to\u00a0discuss the potential activation of\u00a0a\u00a0so-called \u201canti-circumvention tool\u201d. <\/p>\n

Adopted in\u00a02023, this mechanism has remained unused until now but would allow the EU\u00a0to\u00a0restrict exports, supplies, or\u00a0transfers of\u00a0certain goods to\u00a0nations believed to\u00a0be\u00a0aiding Moscow in\u00a0evading sanctions.<\/p>\n

Sources indicate that officials are particularly concerned about loopholes that could undermine the impact of\u00a0the EU\u2019s current sanctions regime, including re-routing of\u00a0critical goods and materials through third-party countries. <\/p>\n

The move would mark a\u00a0significant step in\u00a0the bloc\u2019s efforts to\u00a0ensure sanctions effectiveness and deter countries from indirectly supporting Russia\u2019s economy or\u00a0military efforts.<\/p>\n

While no\u00a0formal decisions have been made yet, analysts say the discussions signal the EU\u2019s intent to\u00a0tighten enforcement and potentially influence international partners to\u00a0comply more strictly with sanctions.<\/p>\n
