{"id":379003,"date":"2025-08-28T00:47:25","date_gmt":"2025-08-28T00:47:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/379003\/"},"modified":"2025-08-28T00:47:25","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T00:47:25","slug":"uk-wastewater-testing-to-reveal-dangerous-pathogens-vax-before-travel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/379003\/","title":{"rendered":"UK Wastewater Testing to Reveal Dangerous Pathogens \u2014 Vax-Before-Travel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>London (Vax-Before-Travel News)<\/p>\n<p>A new program in the United Kingdom will\u00a0evaluate how wastewater monitoring could be used to detect a broader range of dangerous pathogens.<\/p>\n<p>Announced\u00a0by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) on August 26, 2025, using \u00a31.3 million of investment from the UK Integrated Security Fund, the project will assess the use of cutting-edge technologies to improve the UK&#8217;s ability to detect and identify the genetic material of various viruses in wastewater, tracking how the amount of\u00a0virus detected changes over time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This programme builds on the UK&#8217;s\u00a0existing wastewater surveillance for polio.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, poliovirus-positive environmental samples were collected from Yorkshire, the Humber, the South East, and London.<\/p>\n<p>So far in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/polio-global-eradication-nac-and-environmental-surveillance\/environmental-surveillance-for-polio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2025<\/a>, poliovirus has been detected from a sample collected from Shoreham\u00a0STW.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Most of he\u00a0poliovirus\u00a0isolates found in the UK are genetically linked to several African countries, says the UKHSA.<\/p>\n<p>If\u00a0successful, this new program could enhance the UK&#8217;s capability to detect dangerous diseases, such as Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever, a severe disease endemic in Africa, the Balkans, the Middle East, and parts of Asia that has not been targeted in wastewater testing before.<\/p>\n<p>Pat McFadden, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, commented in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/ukhsa-launches-development-programme-for-wastewater-monitoring-techniques-which-could-catch-pandemic-threats-early\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media release<\/a>, &#8220;Our first responsibility is to keep people safe, and the\u00a0Biological Security\u00a0Strategy and\u00a0our new Resilience Action Plan set out how health security is an essential part of our national security.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This new cutting-edge wastewater\u00a0monitoring project has the potential to be a valuable tool in our armoury &#8211;
