{"id":379418,"date":"2025-08-28T04:32:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-28T04:32:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/379418\/"},"modified":"2025-08-28T04:32:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T04:32:14","slug":"frances-survival-is-at-stake-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/379418\/","title":{"rendered":"France\u2019s survival is at stake\u00a0 \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 74-year-old longtime centrist has so far failed to convince the opposition to swallow the bitter medicine he is proposing, a remedy that could assuage French creditors, <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/199100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">financial institutions<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/195605\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ratings agencies<\/a> concerned by the country\u2019s unsustainable levels of public spending.<\/p>\n<p>Bayrou appeared to use the interview to try to reframe the public debate leading up to the vote, which he has scheduled for Sept. 8.<\/p>\n<p>He said he was not asking France\u2019s various political parties to render a judgment on his government, but instead to simply agree on the gravity of the financial perils facing France before embarking on the arduous job of negotiating a slimmed-down budget for next year.<\/p>\n<p>Bayrou said he was willing to negotiate on individual proposals in the budget he unveiled last month, including an unpopular decision to ax two public holidays. But he refused to give ground on what he called \u201cthe effort we must make to ensure that France chooses the path of reducing its over-indebtedness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe economic situation is worsening every year in an intolerable way,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>France\u2019s major opposition parties have already said they will vote to bring down the government.
