{"id":379950,"date":"2025-08-28T09:21:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-28T09:21:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/379950\/"},"modified":"2025-08-28T09:21:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T09:21:14","slug":"jobs-lost-as-glasgows-m-squared-lasers-appoints-administrators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/379950\/","title":{"rendered":"Jobs lost as Glasgow\u2019s M Squared Lasers appoints administrators"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Glasgow laser company M Squared Lasers has fallen into administration, resulting in the loss of twenty-eight jobs, a severe blow to the Scottish National Investment Bank, which first backed the business.<\/p>\n<p>Founded by Dr Graeme Malcolm and Dr Gareth Makerin in 2006, the firm researched and developed photonics and quantum technologies for real-world uses, and exported award-winning products across the UK, Europe, the US and Asia.<\/p>\n<p>Alistair McAlinden and Geoff Jacobs, managing directors at Interpath, have been appointed joint administrators to M Squared Lasers, and said that the company had faced trying times in the aftermath of the pandemic and Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotsecurewest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Scot-Secure West 2025 \u2013 Glasgow\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img class=\"lazyload\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1756372874_882_Copy-of-DIGIT.FYI-In-Article-Ads-750-x-210-px-6.jpg\" alt=\"Scot-Secure West 2025 \u2013 Glasgow\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These and other macro factors have had a \u2018detrimental impact\u2019 on M Squared\u2019s trading, due to a scarcity of key components, tightening of the market for skilled staff and reduced orders from key customers, resulting in a constrained cash position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have mobilised our specialist employee team to ensure that all possible support is provided to the Company\u2019s employees in submitting their claims to the Redundancy Payments Service,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/interpath.com\/media-hub\/articles\/administrators-appointed-to-m-squared-lasers-limited\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> McAlinden.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are also working closely with Skills Development Scotland and their PACE team who are also mobilising to assist employees.\u00a0 We will liaise with the many stakeholders that have been impacted by the insolvency of M Squared over the coming days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite ceasing to trade, the administrators said they are exploring options to sell the business and assets, which include a suite of intellectual property assets, a core customer base, some work-in-progress and stock.<\/p>\n<p>The news comes as a heavy blow to the Scottish National Investment Bank, with M Squared being the very first business the development bank backed upon opening in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>SNIB\u2019s initial investment of \u00a312.5 million was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebank.scot\/media-centre\/first-minister-launches-scottish-national-investment-bank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hailed<\/a> by then First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, who said the laser firm was an example of a growing Scottish company \u2018key to our economic recovery and future prosperity\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since then, the SNIB\u2019s investment in M Squared has grown considerably, resulting in an exposure of around \u00a334 million.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recommended reading<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a statement reported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/25421580.staff-lose-jobs-glasgow-firm-m-squared-lasers-shuts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Herald<\/a>, a spokesperson for the Scottish National Investment Bank said: \u201cThe bank has been working with the business and other stakeholders to find an alternative solution, but unfortunately, this has not been possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe insolvency process is ongoing, and we don\u2019t yet know what the outcome may be for the company or for the bank\u2019s investment at this stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Scotland\u2019s development bank, we were established to fill an identified gap in the Scottish funding landscape by supporting scale-up companies with high-growth potential. Risk is inherent in all investment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are mandated to take on higher risk than other commercial investors to drive growth in the economy.
