{"id":380222,"date":"2025-08-28T11:43:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-28T11:43:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/380222\/"},"modified":"2025-08-28T11:43:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T11:43:09","slug":"pete-townshend-says-he-and-roger-daltrey-dont-communicate-very-well-and-have-different-needs-as-performers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/380222\/","title":{"rendered":"Pete Townshend says he and Roger Daltrey &#8220;don\u2019t communicate very well&#8221; and &#8220;have different needs as performers\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/pete-townshend\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pete Townshend<\/a> has discussed his time working with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/roger-daltrey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roger Daltrey<\/a>, and said that the two of them \u201cdon\u2019t communicate very well\u201d and \u201chave different needs as performers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The comments come as the two of them have joined forces once again and hit the road in the US for their<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/the-who-announce-the-song-is-over-2025-farewell-north-american-tour-buy-tickets-3861480\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> \u2018The Song Is Over Tour\u2019<\/a> \u2013 which is set to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/the-who\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Who<\/a>\u2019s final run of tour dates.<\/p>\n<p>In total, the rock veterans have 16 shows lined-up in the itinerary, and the name of the tour comes as a nod to their song of the same name, released back in 1971.<\/p>\n<p>They have already said that while this run marks the final official tour dates from the band, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/will-the-who-be-playing-more-shows-after-farewell-tour-roger-daltrey-and-pete-townshend-weigh-in-3887524\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">they will still be coming together in the future for the occasional charity show or one-off event<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now, guitarist Pete Townshend has shed more light on the dynamic between him and frontman Roger Daltrey, and said that while they are still content working together, they are on two different pages.<\/p>\n<p>Looking at the dynamic of the band now, following the death of drummer Keith Moon in 1978 and bass guitarist John Entwistle in 2002, Townshend told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/entertainment\/music\/the-who-pete-townshend-tells-all.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AARP<\/a>: \u201cIt\u2019s a brand rather than a band. Roger and I have a duty to the music and the history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Who [still] sells records \u2014 the Moon and Entwistle families have become millionaires. There\u2019s also something more, really: the art, the creative work is when we perform it. We\u2019re celebrating. He and I are very different and we have different needs as performers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also made reference to how he previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/the-whos-pete-townshend-i-dont-love-performing-it-doesnt-fill-my-soul-3858395\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opened up about the strain of being on the road for extensive tours<\/a> and said that playing live \u201cdoesn\u2019t fill my soul\u201d \u2013 comments which\u00a0 would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/the-whos-roger-daltrey-on-touring-with-pete-townshend-i-wont-do-it-with-someone-who-is-half-hearted-about-it-3864812\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prompt a response from Daltrey<\/a>, who said: \u201cIf Pete doesn\u2019t want to tour, I don\u2019t want to be back with The Who on the road, at 81, with someone who doesn\u2019t want [to] be there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe got upset because he felt I had sometimes given the impression of having left the building,\u201d he said, explaining his stance and making reference to the frontman\u2019s battle with hearing loss. \u201cRoger complained about the fact that he is deaf. He\u2019s a singer, and he has to be 100 percent fit in order to do his job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daltrey has opened up about his health again since sharing details of his hearing loss. At his shows at Royal Albert Hall over the Spring, held for the Teenage Cancer Trust,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/the-whos-roger-daltrey-ive-been-told-im-going-blind-3850246\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> he spoke briefly of vision impairments<\/a>, saying: \u201cThe problem with this job is that you go deaf\u2026 And now I\u2019ve been told that I am going blind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He then spoke about his health issues putting a dampener on hopes of a return after the 2025 US dates, saying that he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/roger-daltrey-nervous-about-making-it-to-end-of-the-whos-farewell-tour-the-potential-to-get-really-ill-is-there-3882573\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cnervous\u201d about making it to the end of the current tour, as he has \u201cthe potential to get really ill\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Explaining why they still come together to play live, Townshend told AARP, \u201cTogether we represent all aspects of the Who legacy. I\u2019m the songwriter and creator, but Roger\u2019s been the driving force, meaning keeping The Who band and his brand on track. Even with his solo work, we\u2019ll continue to work together, even if we rarely socialize.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DJZHSKBRYQl\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\" style=\" background:#FFF; border:0; border-radius:3px; box-shadow:0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width:658px; min-width:326px; padding:0; width:99.375%; width:-webkit-calc(100% - 2px); width:calc(100% - 2px);\">\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>After the band complete their US tour dates, it is looking likely that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/pete-townshend-planning-one-man-shows-once-the-who-finish-farewell-tour-3886133\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Townshend will turn his sights to his solo album, \u2018The Age Of Anxiety<\/a>\u2019.\u00a0 The album is something he has been working on since 2007, and is based on a novel he wrote of the same title (which got published in 2019).<\/p>\n<p>He also opened up about his outlook on guitar, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/the-whos-pete-townshed-not-crazy-about-touring-and-doesnt-have-a-relationship-with-the-guitar-3861782\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">admitted that he doesn\u2019t \u201chave a relationship\u201d with the instrument<\/a> to the extent that some might think.<\/p>\n<p>Before then, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/the-who-pete-townshend-interview-quadrophenia-ballet-setlists-new-music-tour-3768502\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Townshend spoke to NME in 2024 about the possibility of more new music<\/a> from The Who, following on from 2019\u2019s \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/reviews\/the-who-who-review-13-years-since-their-last-album-this-stands-up-alongside-their-classics-2580985\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Who<\/a>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think there is. If there was a need or a place for a Who album, could I write the songs for it within six weeks?
