{"id":380234,"date":"2025-08-28T11:49:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-28T11:49:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/380234\/"},"modified":"2025-08-28T11:49:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T11:49:10","slug":"asian-hornet-nest-found-in-cork-city-after-intensive-search-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/380234\/","title":{"rendered":"Asian hornet nest found in Cork City after intensive search \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An Asian hornet nest has been located in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork\/\">Cork City<\/a> by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-parks-and-wildlife-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-parks-and-wildlife-service\/\">National Parks and Wildlife Service<\/a> (NPWS).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The insect, native to southeast Asia, has now spread through continental Europe. It kills honeybees and wild bees, with control efforts ongoing in the UK to prevent the establishment of colonies there. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The sighting of an Asian hornet in Cork earlier this month triggered the creation of a taskforce to co-ordinate the State response.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Christopher O\u2019Sullivan, Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, confirmed on Thursday that the nest is in the southside of Cork City. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Speaking on RT\u00c9\u2019s Morning Ireland, Mr O\u2019Sullivan said the nest was located after an \u201cintensive effort\u201d by the National Parks and Wildlife Service. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Fianna F\u00e1il TD said he \u201ccan\u2019t give away the exact location for obvious reasons\u201d but that it was near where the original hornet was sighted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI know people may be alarmed and may be alerted by the fact that we now have a confirmed sighting of an Asian hornet nest because of the devastating impacts that an Asian hornet outbreak would have on biodiversity and nature in general. But it is a success story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr O\u2019Sullivan said queen hornets, if they get out into wider circulation, may build their own nests, causing the population to multiply. However, they tend to leave their nests later in the autumn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe can\u2019t say with absolute certainty \u2013 and there\u2019s still a lot of work and investigative work to be done here \u2013 but we can say that usually these queens leave their nest much later in the autumn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The junior minister praised the \u201cquick\u201d work of NPWS rangers who located the nest.
