This morning, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom\u00a0initiated\u00a0a process\u00a0under UN Security Council resolution 2231 (2015)\u00a0to reimpose\u00a0UN sanctions\u00a0on Iran.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
These\u00a0European\u00a0allies\u00a0\u2013 the E3 \u2013 have laid out a clear\u00a0case\u00a0of Iran\u2019s\u00a0continuing\u00a0\u201csignificant non-performance\u201d of its nuclear\u00a0commitments,\u00a0establishing\u00a0a\u00a0strong\u00a0basis for\u00a0initiating\u00a0snapback.\u00a0Moreover, the E3\u00a0could have\u00a0initiated\u00a0snapback at any point since 2019 but chose\u00a0instead\u00a0to\u00a0first\u00a0pursue intensive\u00a0outreach and engagement\u00a0\u2013 to provide Iran with a diplomatic offramp from its\u00a0strategy of\u00a0nuclear escalation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The United States appreciates the leadership of our E3\u00a0allies\u00a0in this effort.\u00a0Over the coming weeks, we will work\u00a0with them\u00a0and other Members of the UN Security Council\u00a0to\u00a0successfully complete the snapback of international sanctions and restrictions on Iran,\u00a0as the President\u00a0instructed\u00a0in National Security Presidential Memorandum 2.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
At the same time, the United States\u00a0remains\u00a0available for direct engagement with Iran \u2013 in furtherance of\u00a0a peaceful, enduring resolution to the Iran nuclear\u00a0issue.
