{"id":381701,"date":"2025-08-29T04:15:15","date_gmt":"2025-08-29T04:15:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/381701\/"},"modified":"2025-08-29T04:15:15","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T04:15:15","slug":"apple-sought-constructive-and-open-dialogue-with-new-eu-competition-chief-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/381701\/","title":{"rendered":"Apple sought \u2018constructive and open dialogue\u2019 with new EU competition chief \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tech giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/apple\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/apple\">Apple <\/a>looked to develop a \u201cconstructive and open dialogue\u201d with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-commission\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-commission\">European Commission\u2019s<\/a> new competition chief, in an attempt to draw a line under years of bitter fighting over its tax arrangements, correspondence shows. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A legal battle between the iPhone maker and the commission, culminating in Apple being ordered to pay the State \u20ac13 billion in back taxes, came to define the tense relationship between Brussels regulators and US tech multinationals in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Internal documents show Apple made moves to reset its relationship with the EU, at the start of commission president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ursula-von-der-leyen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ursula-von-der-leyen\/\">Ursula von der Leyen<\/a>\u2019s second term at the top of the bloc\u2019s powerful executive arm. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Apple and Microsoft both made efforts to get on the good side of the new EU commissioner for competition and climate transition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/2024\/10\/31\/eu-commissioner-hearings-may-not-be-the-bloodbath-once-feared\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/2024\/10\/31\/eu-commissioner-hearings-may-not-be-the-bloodbath-once-feared\/\">Teresa Ribera<\/a>, who took over from Margrethe Vestager last December. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Apple told Ms Ribera it was \u201ceager to establish a constructive and open dialogue\u201d on competition matters, in a January 9th letter seen by The Irish Times. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/economy\/2025\/08\/26\/donald-trump-threatens-retaliation-over-taxes-that-discriminate-against-us-tech\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump threatens retaliation over rules and taxes that \u2018discriminate\u2019 against US techOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The US tech giant said it had been a \u201ccommitted partner to Europe for 40 years\u201d and was spending tens of billions of euros a year with European suppliers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a hugely significant 2016 competition case, the commission ordered Apple to pay Ireland more than \u20ac13 billion in back taxes, on the basis that favourable tax arrangements it had enjoyed in the Republic amounted to unfair aid to the tech company. Apple and the Government lost a years-long appeal challenging the decision last year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The EU\u2019s strict new digital regulations have become another flashpoint between Brussels and US tech firms. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Apple raised proceedings the EU executive was taking against the company during a March 12th meeting between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tim-cook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tim-cook\/\">Tim Cook<\/a>, Apple chief executive, Ms Ribera, and several commission officials. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The meeting, which took place over a video call, discussed Apple\u2019s \u201cactivities and interests\u201d in the EU, according to the minutes.
