{"id":381847,"date":"2025-08-29T05:54:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-29T05:54:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/381847\/"},"modified":"2025-08-29T05:54:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T05:54:10","slug":"eu-condemns-russian-attack-on-kyiv-office-dw-08-29-2025-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/381847\/","title":{"rendered":"EU condemns Russian attack on Kyiv office \u2013 DW \u2013 08\/29\/2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/russias-war-in-ukraine\/t-60931789\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia launched its full-scale invasion<\/a> of Ukraine in February 2022, Moscow and Kyiv held rounds of peace talks the following month \u2014 first in Belarus, and later in Turkey.<\/p>\n<p>Those negotiations failed after the two sides disagreed on key points, including Russia requiring that Ukraine abandon its ambitions to join NATO and limit its military.<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0<strong>2025<\/strong>\u00a0has seen a renewed diplomatic push:<\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump&#8217;s return to the White House in <strong>January <\/strong>marked a renewal of efforts toward\u00a0a ceasefire deal.<\/p>\n<p>In late <strong>February<\/strong>, he hosted Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House. That meeting ended abruptly after an acrimonious argument that played out in front of watching journalists.<\/p>\n<p><img data-format=\"MASTER_LANDSCAPE\" data-id=\"71789260\" data-url=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/71789260_${formatId}.jpg\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\" alt=\"President Donald Trump meets with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy at the White House in Washington, D.C., U.S., February 28, 2025\" style=\"padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; max-height: 0;\"\/>Trump and his Vice President JD Vance accused the Ukrainian leader of being ungrateful and told him he had &#8216;no cards to play&#8217; in negotiations with MoscowImage: Brian Snyder\/REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>In a bid to apply pressure on Ukraine, the US suspended military aid in\u00a0<strong>March\u00a0<\/strong>and stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kyiv agreed to a 30-day ceasefire, but Russia refused, saying that the &#8220;root causes&#8221; of the conflict needed to be addressed before a full truce could be implemented.<\/p>\n<p>By <strong>mid-April<\/strong>, frustration in Washington had grown to the point that Trump said the US was ready to abandon the peace process unless significant progress was made.<\/p>\n<p>In early <strong>May<\/strong>, Russia unilaterally implemented a three-day ceasefire<\/p>\n<p>After European leaders urged Putin to extend that truce, the Russian president proposed a resumption of direct talks in Istanbul that were frozen in 2022.\u00a0Neither Putin nor Zelenskyy attended those negotiations, with low-level delegations instead being sent to the Turkish city.\u00a0<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/russia-and-ukraine-conduct-a-fourth-pow-swap\/a-72912073\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The talks resulted in an exchange of prisoners of war (POWs)<\/a> and a pledge to continue the dialogue.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/ukraine-updates-third-round-of-talks-ends-in-istanbul\/live-73377690\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Two more rounds<\/a> of talks in <strong>June and Jul<\/strong><strong>y<\/strong> also failed to secure any meaningful progress on a lasting peace agreement, or even a brief ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>During a meeting with the UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in <strong>late July<\/strong>, Trump set a deadline of &#8220;10 or 12&#8221; days for Putin to end the war.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>August<\/strong>, Trump hosted Putin for a historic summit in <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/for-ukraine-the-alaska-summit-was-a-complete-disappointment\/a-73667137\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the US state of Alaska<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img data-format=\"MASTER_LANDSCAPE\" data-id=\"73663077\" data-url=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/73663077_${formatId}.jpg\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\" alt=\"Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, and his US counterpart Donald Trump pose together during a welcoming ceremony at an airport ahead of their meeting in Alaska\" style=\"padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; max-height: 0;\"\/>Held under the slogan &#8216;Pursuing Peace,&#8217; Trump went into the talks confident that a ceasefire deal would be reached.Image: Sergei Bobylev\/TASS\/IMAGO<\/p>\n<p>However, despite Trump claiming the meeting was &#8220;productive,&#8221; <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/trump-admits-he-and-putin-did-not-reach-key-agreements\/live-73647632\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the summit was inconclusive, with no deals signed<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Later in August, <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/us-ukraine-europe-trump-zelenskyy-talks-eu\/a-73683920\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European leaders backed Zelenskyy<\/a> in his return to the White House to press Trump on security guarantees and block territorial concessions.
