{"id":381864,"date":"2025-08-29T06:08:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-29T06:08:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/381864\/"},"modified":"2025-08-29T06:08:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T06:08:14","slug":"eu-moves-closer-to-using-russian-assets-to-rebuild-ukraine-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/381864\/","title":{"rendered":"EU moves closer to using Russian assets to rebuild Ukraine \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Buy low, sell high<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Transferring the assets into a new fund would also allow them to be placed in riskier investments capable of generating higher returns for Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>That would be a change from the current rulebook, which compels Euroclear to invest the assets with the Belgian central bank, which offers the lowest risk-free rate of return available.<\/p>\n<p>Skeptics, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7c6ae0e9-aebf-4793-8bc1-35c695466381\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Euroclear CEO Val\u00e9rie Urbain<\/a>, worry, however, that EU taxpayers would have to bear the brunt of any losses resulting from the riskier operations.<\/p>\n<p>To share the legal and financial burden, Belgium wants other EU countries to assume liability for the assets under the Commission\u2019s proposed plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBelgium is not alone here.
